Host of networking problems ...

(sigh) Where do I start ...

I have been working several hours now on my network problem and have gotten
nowhere. I have searched the newsletters and found good info but nothing for
my problem exactly.

It seems I can't figure out how to get my two computers to see eachother on
the network through a game, this is how it started. It also seems that I
can't get my other computer to even share the internet with this one (main
comp).
Ok, so I'll mention now that I'm using DSL and the ISP gives me a dynamic ip
that the modem comverts to a static one I see through DHCP as 192.168.2.10
(looks like a standard router ip). I'll also mention now that I have 2
network adapters (but acually three show up in network connections, the third
is listed as 1394 Net Adapter and is disabled) and I have a gateway that I'm
not sure why it's there but it's diabled (I think it installed with the ISP
software but unsure). There is only two ports at the back of my computer for
ethernet (but three adapters?) and those two adapters are the ones I'm trying
to use for the network. I basically have my Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010
PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller as the one that conects to the internet
(modem) and my NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller as the one connected to my
second pc via crossover cable (both controllers are onboard). The second pc
has a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. I have no router.

I hope this isn't too much but i'll continue (sigh).
Ok, on to the software ... I have windows firewall disabled but have Trend
Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 with a firewall enabled and I took
steps to make sure it was setup proper but I could be wrong. I will also
mention now that both computers can see each other in network neighbourhood
and that they can access each others files. I believe when I was setting up
the firewall settings in Trend Micro I messed up the ip for the NVIDIA nForce
controller, I tried to locate the gateway IP addy and MAC addy with the find
feature and it came up with nothing and after that the adapter said it has a
"Manually Configured" IP of 192.168.0.1 (I believe it was different before).

I'll mention now that I'm also running XP home on both systems with service
pack 2 and I have ran the network setup wizzard on both machines successfully.
I have tried pinging both systems and my main pc says "Request timed out"
and the second pc says "Destination host unreachable" to both adapters (I
figured I would try pinging both adapters since they both have separate
IP's). I'll also list now what the ipconfig /all yielded for me.

Also when I try to connect with the second PC it asks me to use dialup (it's
installed or was installed by the Sympatico software as a backup way to
connect if DSL failed for emergencies). I should have mentioned this earlier
too but the Network adapter on the second PC says that there is little or no
connectivity. Prior to messing around with my network I have now, I was
networked with my brothers laptop and it was fine except we couldn't see
eachother in lan games (could be game related) but everything else looked
A'ok. Because I couldn't see him in a lan game tho I got him to install
service pack 2 because I thought this might be the issue and it made it so he
too had limited or no connectivity to me. I tried to resolve that issue
myself but gave up and am now working on my own setup. I mentioned the
sevice pack 2 issue with the laptop to maybe show a connection with that and
my two PC's since both had little or no connectivinty with my comp but could
still access the network. Also the conectivity on my end has always seemed
fine (host PC)

I know all this is an aweful lot of info but I didn't know what was
pertinant and what wasn't, I'm sorry if it's long winded also :-( but I
always hated grammar.
I really hope someone can help and if I missed anything let me know?

Also what's a tunnel adapter?

Teredo Tunneling (which uses a tunnel adapter) is Microsoft providing IPV6 on a
native IPV4 platform. Some folks claim that IPV6 and Windows Networking
(browsing / file sharing) works fine with IPV6. My experience is if you have
problems, the first thing to do is to remove it from both computers. Get file
sharing working, then add it back and see if file sharing works.

sildargod

two questions,

what game and are you connecting over the internet?

if you are connecting locally, you need to set both of your pcs to the
same ip range (that being 192.168.0.x or .1.x or .2.x - you get the
idea) and the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0 or similar)

then, ensure that your ethernet cable is working.

try and ping one another using the command prompt (click start -> run -
type cmd and press enter) by entering ping 192.168.0.x (x being the
number of the other pc) and if you have no luck, try turning off you
firewalls

ideally, you should be able to ping one another

then, you start the game and from there, things should be plain
sailing, knowing both ip addresses.

i see the second pc has no ip4 address, try and manually configure it
to be 192.168.2.15 and ping 192.168.2.10.

cheers!

The game is Civilizations IV and no I'm not connecting over the net. First I
want to get it working locally, then work on getting pc 2 online.

I have good news and bad news.

Bad news is that that game still doesn't work, I tried lan and direct ip but
no go. Also when I tried to ping from both comps the request timed out. I
did eveything you said except when you sugested the ip i use, I used
192.168.3.2 since it corresponds with the controller on pc 1 which i made
192.168.3.1. Both subnets are the same now ...
and this leads to the good news, the limited or no connectivity is gone now
so they can (still) file share and have connectivity but still no ping and
game connectivity.

Here is the ipconfig for pc 1, I kept eveything in to be thorough.

I hope that I manually configured the ip4 right because I honestly don't
know the difference between ip4 and ip6 lol or how to configure them. What I
did was went into the controllers properties and then the properties of the
TCP/IP protocol.

I have a question again, because 2 have 2 adapters on pc 1, the two adapters
that will communicate with each other are the 2 that are connected together
right? So since pc 2 (realteck adapter) is physically connected to pc 1's
NVIDIA nForce adapter, they are the ones I should be pinging on each pc? I
was wondering (even though I did try both) since you mentioned earlier that I
should try to ping 192.168.2.10 which is the ip of the Marvell Yukon adapter,
but I don't know anything about networking really :p.

I also want to mention again that the marvell controller that i'm using to
connect to the net is going through a gateway (that my modem creates using
DHCP to assign the ip of 192.168.2.10 right?). I also want to mention that
the gateway is setup in the adapters properties and not an acual gateway I
can see in the network connections because that gateway is disabled, and I
can still connect to the net. I don't know the exact connection but I know
the modem is acting like a router. Will this interfer with my pc 2 trying to
share the internet? Maybe someone can also explain the connection to me I'm
daft and really hate being that way.

Thanks tons.

Thanks Chuck, but now I need to know or rather I'm curious what a tunnel
adapter is lol!

I'm not sure if you were thinking that was my problem, but I'm pretty sure
it's not (but I really don't know) because File sharing has never been the
problem, I have always been able to share files even tho I had no
connectivity.

But I really appreciate the info I'm so interested in all this I simply love
computers, it just frustrates the *poo* out of me when I can get something to
work but I don't give up (sigh).

Thanks again.

If you don't have any specific need for IPV6, remove it. All you need, to
communicate over the Internet, and simultaneously allow your computers to share
files, is NetBIOS Over TCP/IP, and TCP/IP.

Microsoft provided Teredo Tunneling, and IPV6, so your computers can communicate
with IPV6 only networks and hosts. For normal communication, you don't need it.
You can adjust the IPV4 settings all you wish, but if the IPV6 components are
causing your problems - and there have been plenty of folks like you who have
discovered that's the case - then you have to remove them. At least to see if
there are other problems, like maybe IPV4 settings, or physical problems.

two questions,

what game and are you connecting over the internet?

if you are connecting locally, you need to set both of your pcs to the
same ip range (that being 192.168.0.x or .1.x or .2.x - you get the
idea) and the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0 or similar)

then, ensure that your ethernet cable is working.

try and ping one another using the command prompt (click start -> run -
type cmd and press enter) by entering ping 192.168.0.x (x being the
number of the other pc) and if you have no luck, try turning off you
firewalls

ideally, you should be able to ping one another

then, you start the game and from there, things should be plain
sailing, knowing both ip addresses.

i see the second pc has no ip4 address, try and manually configure it
to be 192.168.2.15 and ping 192.168.2.10.

cheers!
Kaleem

To share the internet, you have to turn on ICS - internet connection
sharing. This will give an IP address of 192.168.0.1 to the Ethernet
adaptor connected to the modem and cannot be changed.

For all the PC's to see each other and connect, all the IP addresses have to
be in the same subnet range for ALL the network cards (i.e. a PC with ip
address 192.168.3.xxx will not see anything on an ip address of
192.168.2.xxx unless they are bridged which ICS won't let you do).

So options to try after activating ICS are to set the second network card to
192.168.0.2 and I would leave the network card in the other PC to get a
network address automatically, (thus forcing it to find the DHCP server and
connect to the internet).

If you can't get ICS working, you will need to install a proxy server such
as CCProxy http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/

The game probably doesn't work because it thinks it is on network
192.168.3.xxx (default gateway due to the internet connection) and your
other PC is on network 192.168.2.xxx

Thanks Chuck, but now I need to know or rather I'm curious what a tunnel

I'm not sure if you were thinking that was my problem, but I'm pretty sure

Windows Networking (file sharing), and Internet access, uses TCP/IP (with "IP"
being IPV4). IPV4 uses IP addresses with the format nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. TCP/IP
(IPV4) and NetBIOS Over TCP/IP, is the default and supported transport for
Windows XP, and most preceding Windows versions.

Tunneling is the process of letting an application, running on your native IPV4
computer, communicate with a host that uses only IPV6. The IPV6 communications
"tunnel" thru IPV4 to the distant IPV6 network and host.

Teredo Tunneling, and IPV6, are supposed to be transparent to NetBIOS Over
TCP/IP. In cases like yours, this may not be the case. Many times, folks like
you have written here describing problems like yours. In most cases, removal of
IPV6 is essential to resolution of their problems. Google in this forum, if you
don't believe me.

I did as you said by disabling ipv4 and restarted both computers to boot and
a few things changed. One, most notably and not sure how signifigant was the
disappearing of the gateway that I described as being disabled. I noticed
tho before it disappeared that it was also enabled and I'm not sure why.
Yesterday I ran the network wizzard a few times trying to get it to work
proper and I had some progress by maybe activating ICS like Tony said I
needed to but I'm not sure yet if I did, anyways I was thinking that was why
the gateway was enaled after I took off IPv6, but why did it disappear? I am
thinking it's a good thing because I know it wasn't needed to connect to the
internet and was just there as far as I know.

I did notice tho that the tunneling adapters are still there and not sure why.

Here is the latest config so far for pc 1.

The game is Civilizations IV and no I'm not connecting over the net.
First I
want to get it working locally, then work on getting pc 2 online.

I have good news and bad news.

Bad news is that that game still doesn't work, I tried lan and direct ip
but
no go. Also when I tried to ping from both comps the request timed out.
I
did eveything you said except when you sugested the ip i use, I used
192.168.3.2 since it corresponds with the controller on pc 1 which i made
192.168.3.1. Both subnets are the same now ...
and this leads to the good news, the limited or no connectivity is gone
now
so they can (still) file share and have connectivity but still no ping and
game connectivity.

Here is the ipconfig for pc 1, I kept eveything in to be thorough.

I hope that I manually configured the ip4 right because I honestly don't
know the difference between ip4 and ip6 lol or how to configure them.
What I
did was went into the controllers properties and then the properties of
the
TCP/IP protocol.

I have a question again, because 2 have 2 adapters on pc 1, the two
adapters
that will communicate with each other are the 2 that are connected
together
right? So since pc 2 (realteck adapter) is physically connected to pc 1's
NVIDIA nForce adapter, they are the ones I should be pinging on each pc?
I
was wondering (even though I did try both) since you mentioned earlier
that I
should try to ping 192.168.2.10 which is the ip of the Marvell Yukon
adapter,
but I don't know anything about networking really :p.

I also want to mention again that the marvell controller that i'm using to
connect to the net is going through a gateway (that my modem creates using
DHCP to assign the ip of 192.168.2.10 right?). I also want to mention
that
the gateway is setup in the adapters properties and not an acual gateway I
can see in the network connections because that gateway is disabled, and I
can still connect to the net. I don't know the exact connection but I
know
the modem is acting like a router. Will this interfer with my pc 2 trying
to
share the internet? Maybe someone can also explain the connection to me
I'm
daft and really hate being that way.

Thanks tons.

two questions,

what game and are you connecting over the internet?

if you are connecting locally, you need to set both of your pcs to the
same ip range (that being 192.168.0.x or .1.x or .2.x - you get the
idea) and the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0 or similar)

then, ensure that your ethernet cable is working.

try and ping one another using the command prompt (click start -> run -
type cmd and press enter) by entering ping 192.168.0.x (x being the
number of the other pc) and if you have no luck, try turning off you
firewalls

ideally, you should be able to ping one another

then, you start the game and from there, things should be plain
sailing, knowing both ip addresses.

i see the second pc has no ip4 address, try and manually configure it
to be 192.168.2.15 and ping 192.168.2.10.

cheers!

I just have 2 questions before I go trying to do this, because the modem I use has firmware that assigns me a DHCP ip can that be changed? The current IP is 192.168.2.10 and the modems IP is 192.168.2.1 and I believe these two ip's are fixed and perhaps cannot be changed but I just wanted to ask to be sure it's ok.
Question two is how do I get ICS installed lol, I think I might have
inadvertantly done it yesterday because now my connection #2 (marvell
adapter) has the shared status as well. But it might not be the case can you
explain more on ICS setup?

Thanks too for the input.

Thanks again for the patience and explaining these things to me.

So that's what it's saying so far. I'm going to try to figure out what Tony
sugested now and see how that fairs :).

Let's try again. Un install IPV6. Enable IPV4. IPV4 is the native transport
used by Windows. IPV6 is what you don't need - and what Teredo Tunneling
Pseudo-Interface supports.

Having a think about this, I didn't expect you modem to have a DHCP server
so my first suggestion won't work.

What should happen is that you run the network wizard, select other
computers connect through this one to the internet and choose the Ethernet
connector that connects to the modem as your internet connection.

This should allocate a fixed IP of 192.168.0.1 to the other network adaptor
that connects to the other PC (which is your network/LAN). The other PC
should then automatically get an IP address in the range 192.168.0.xxx.

What you are aiming to do is to isolate the network adaptor connected to the
internet from the rest of the network for local traffic and use ICS to route
between the internet and your LAN.

OK, that looks a bit better. Now, if file sharing is truly working, then NBT
broadcasts are probably getting from computer to computer. Which makes
malfunctioning firewalls less likely.

I wonder if having the 2 network connectors on user-a15a222baf is a problem. I
know that it would confuse me. What physical wires run between the two
computers? When you ping 192.168.2.20 from user-a15a222baf, does the ping go
out (and come back) thru the right network connector? Likewise, when you ping
192.168.2.15, is that going thru the wire connected to the nVidia?

And I know that you say you have disabled firewalls on both computers, but what
firewalls did you disable? Please be specific here. Note two details that I
repeat, over and over, in my articles:
# Watch out for AntiVirus / AntiWorm products that contain firewall components!
# NOTE: The nVidia nForce is a hardware firewall on the NIC or motherboard!

Ok, I HAD two firewalls not including windows firewall, One was Trend
Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 (The one I use now), and the NVIDIA
nForce 4 onboard firewall (uninstalled). You mentioned that perhaps the
onboard nvidia firewall might not truely be uninstalled in your article and I
had a sneaky suspition about that but assumed it was and still do but it was
installed and might be the problem because I simply uninstalled it from
add/remove programs I believe. I'll also mention the store I bought my
machine from said that the nvidia firewall caused problems they found but
this was after I had already installed it (sigh). You also mentioned in your
article that you shouldn't uninstall the windows firewall "service". I'm not
sure if I did or not, I did just disable it from the methods you mentioned
but I did also tell windows not to monitor the status of the firewall (in the
same options screen with Security Center) so I wouldn't keep getting the
reminder that the firewall wasn't on. Basically I would disable it to try
and play multiplayer games over the internet and the firewall may have caused
problems so I had to disable it time to time. I don't know alot about
opening specific ports and whatnot so I tend to leave it alone and just
disable it temporarily. Because my antivirus software is oem and was setup
and installed prior to me recieveing it I don't know alot about it nor do I
have a manual for it. I never bothered to look it up online, but will if it
comes down to it being the problem. I hope your right about it not likely
being firewall problems.

I'm going to quote you here to break down the questions and answer them
accordindly :).
You said "I wonder if having the 2 network connectors on user-a15a222baf is
a problem. I know that it would confuse me." - I hope this isn't the case
because the whole point of this is to network my two computers without a
router :-(. "What physical wires run between the two computers?". - Ok,
it's a home made crossover (rj45) fast ethernet cable (100 mbps), but because
the file sharing works that couldn't be the problem right, or could it?
"When you ping 192.168.2.20 from user-a15a222baf, does the ping go out (and
come back) thru the right network connector?". - LOL, I have NO idea. All I
know is that pc 2 is connected via the realtek card and that adapter 3
(according to windows) or the nvidia adapter (physically). I know it says it
times out ... but I know what your saying and I was thinking the same thing
.... maybe the two adapters arn't communicating properly but I have no idea
that's way beyond me lol. PC 2 has one nic so it's simple on that end.
"Likewise, when you ping 192.168.2.15, is that going thru the wire connected
to the nVidia?". - Again I don't even know how to test for that besides
pinging. It times out as you know and that's all I really know ... I don't
have equipment to test for it but I do have a store bought crossover I will
try tonight.

Is there a way to test for the communication between two adapters on a
computer? Can I really know what adapter is sending the ping out and what
one pc 2 is trying to send it two? I assumed it was like it is physically,
pc 2 sends to adapter 2 (nvidia onboard) and nvidia onboard to adapter 1
(marvell onboard) to the modem. That's what i was all confused about earlier
and didn't know if they were speaking to eachother or setup right. there
might be something i was missing. That reminds me, how do I even know if ICS
is enabled on the machine ... I see that connection 2 is shared (marvell
adapter) but thats it.

I think we should get the local network working first though right, then
worry about ICS right? I'm still lost for what to do really ... maybe you
can share some diagnostic tools or ways to furture see what is really
happening. What should I try first, to narrow down the possibilities, I'm
very patient because I know I need it and have no choice lol!

And I know that you say you have disabled firewalls on both computers, but
what
firewalls did you disable? Please be specific here. Note two details that I
repeat, over and over, in my articles:
# Watch out for AntiVirus / AntiWorm products that contain firewall
components!
# NOTE: The nVidia nForce is a hardware firewall on the NIC or motherboard!

Last things first. If you are going to use ICS, that will change the network.
So getting file sharing working, then running ICS, may or may not work. Both
the ICS server and client will change.

So looking backwards where you are, you have 2 computers, and you can do file
sharing between both, right? So now you are left with 2 problems:
# Internet service.
# Pinging (IP connectivity).

Am I right so far? Let's take this one step at a time.

Hey Chuck, it's been a little bit since I wrote but I was too overwhelmed by
problems and had to take a break. Ok, ultimately I want to have the ip
connectivity between computers but don't neccessarily need ICS running for
that right? I want my two computers to be able to communicate with each
other via TCP/IP properly but comp 2 doesn't need to access the net. It
would be nice but I'll sacrifice it if I need two. What's easier I guess?
In all acuallity I want 3 computers networked and a router but this is later.
Right now I just want my two computers to be able to communicate propperly
or to even get through to each other besides file sharing. In other words
and most importantly lol to be able to play games via IP/Lan. I'll try later
tonight using only the one adapter and disable the other ... this might
eliminate the possibility of the two onboard adapters not comunicating
between each other properly.

What do you suggest I do for my setup? Would a good router make all the
difference? If so I'll get one sooner than later :).

The nVidia nForce is a new product. I will be open minded, but remain
skeptical. If it's a hardware device, is it really possible to "turn it off"?
Since the firewall processor is literally somewhere in the path between the CPU
/ OS and the Ethernet port, how do you turn that off? Flip a switch that
bypasses the firewall processor? How do you know that a bypass switch works?

Now, having 2 firewalls is OK, IFF one of them is hardware based, as in the
nVidia nForce. Having 2 software based firewalls is NOT OK. Software firewalls
install themselves into the network stack, generally into the LSP / Winsock. To
do this, they have to change pointers. For instance, if the current chain is:
Program A <==> Program B <==> Ethernet port
a firewall inserts itself so
Program A <==> Firewall <==> Program B <==> Ethernet port
Two software firewalls doing this, unless properly written, can muck up the
chain in various ways, preventing traffic, or maybe bypassing different
programs. This becomes what we call, LSP / Winsock corruption.

Now Windows Firewall being built into Windows, it cannot be un installed, but
must be disabled, if it's not to be used. Third party firewalls, that install
into LSP / Winsock, are known here for not reacting properly to being disabled.
If you have ANY third party firewalls, the experienced helpers here will advise
you to do one of two things:
# Enable and configure properly.
# Enable then un install. And follow all instructions of the vendor.
We do NOT advise:
# Disable.
# Disable then un install.
And PLEASE do not EVER try to run more than one third party firewall.

Homemade crossover? As in made by hand? Please NO. Try the store one.

To know how network traffic is going and coming, you need to examine the static
route table.

ICS is NOT enabled. Both the Marvell and the nVidia on user-a15a222baf are on
192.168.2/24. That's what is confusing me - we keep talking about ICS, but I
don't see which is the ICS input (WAN), and which is the ICS output (LAN)?

The thing about ICS - it provides, and requires use of, a DHCP server. When you
enable ICS, the ICS clients have to use the DHCP settings that it provides.
This changes file sharing, in that it changes TCP/IP.

So you really have to get ICS working first, if you're going to use it at all.

If you are ever planning to get a router, now would be the time. Getting ICS
working, then trashing ICS and putting in a router, is 3 times the work. Start
with a router.

And see my notes above. Please.

Thanks a billion Chuck, I know it's been awhile again but I gave up on it
awhile ago lol to frustrating. However, now that I will have money for a
router I will get a good one and get back to you. I'll make a new post
possible but also talk to you in this thread so i can get your opinion too
:). The router I was planning on getting is the D-Link Wireless 108G Gaming
Router. Let me know what you think perhaps and I'll get back to you on how I
fair with the new router.
