Host name resolution failing on some Internet connections

Dianne

My laptop runs XP SP1, and I have wireless DSL at home.
On my DSL and on my company's LAN, my laptop has no
problem with host name resolution, but when I try to dial-
up or use other wireless networks, I can connect and ping
ip's, but host name resolution fails. Ipconfig /all
yields no DNS addresses. I have both the dial up and
wireless connections configured to obtain DNS
automatically and DHCP is enabled.

Ideas? Many, many thanks.

Dianne,

I haven't seen this particular problem before. Has it always
been like that or did it work and stopped working?

Just a few vague ideas. Have a look at your hosts file (in the
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc folder) and check for peculiar
content. Do a virus scan and also scan for adware and spyware
(use SpyBot, for example, a free download). Repair the IP stack
and Winsock, according to the procedures given in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

Do you have any third party wireless or modem configuration
software installed? If so, uninstall it.

If all else fails, you could try a repair installation.
