Hoping for an alternate to "Reformat and reinstall"

Hello,

I've run around or been run around so much in the last month that I feel
like a whirling dervish.

Anyway I have a P4 2.53 Ghz machine with 1 Gb RAM running Windows XP. I have
purchased and tried to install

4 different scanners (3 different manufacturers) all without success. When I
tried to resolve the problems with the

various tech supports I was led by the hand via email (only 1 manufacturer
would provide a toll free number)

through the recipe solutions. After many days back and forth without success
they would imply, but never directly

say it, that it was XP's fault........not theirs.

Simply put, I would install the drivers and XP would find and recognize the
scanners but the device manager

would install the scanners in a category it named "Unknown".....and the
scanner software could not find the

drivers. Tech supports would throw up their time constrained hands and
suggest that I backup to CD, reformat

and reinstall XP.

While I recognize that I may ultimately have to go through that nightmare I
can't help but believe that it is an

extreme solution. There must be some tech genius out there who can offer
simpler solution.

I did try to do a "System restore" using dates prior to the first scanner
install but XP would indicate something

akin to "Cannot restore to that date".

Any advice or comments will be appreciated.

Seems to me, that if you've tried hardware from 3 different manufacturers, and
all of them supplied XPee drivers, then it *IS* XPee's fault.
You *should* reformat ... but install a different OS (W98, Linux, etc.),
unless all you have is one of those lame POS 'system restore CD's', then I'd
call up the maker of your system and demand they allow you to have whatever OS
CD *YOU* want on *YOUR* system...not what they or M$ say should be on it.

Why don't YOU spend three minutes coming up with a better introductory line,
instead of insulting people who ask legitimate questions?

And if you ask, I'd be happy to tell you what to do with YOUR pencil
(either end, it doesn't matter.)

I'm going to offer a possible solution which may or may not work. I found
out after much aggravation that a scanner I had installed and wouldn't work
needed to "shake hands" with the computer before it would be recognized.

Check your scanner software to see if there's a utility that says something
like "verify port" and click on verify. I have to do that each time I use
my scanner or it won't work, I almost tossed the scanner because I didn't
get any help from either the scanner manufacturer, Dell, or Microsoft. I
was checking around the software and found that utility and was surprised
that such a simple thing, that the scanner manufacturer should have known,
solved the problem. It's disheartening to know that there is very little
"support" out there.

I also want to comment on Joh N.'s inappropriate comment. He/she is
probably 12 years old and feeling good about himself making other people
think they're stupid. Just be glad you're not his/her parent.

Where was the "insult" I supposedly made, you dipshit? I gave her a legitimate
opinion of what could be done to fix the problem. Seems to me, you've got one
hell of a set of delicate sensibilities. Grow some cods and act like a man.
You could also go ahead and tell me what to do with the "pencil" (****in'
moron, you can't even remember after 5 seconds it was a 'pen'), I'd let you
lick it clean, honest. Panty waist.

You ****ing idiot. Are you and tamerlane both from the puddle end of the gene
pool? I gave just as good advice as you just did. If you're too ****ing stupid
to realize it's no worse than yours, then maybe you should send your own system
back to the shop, because you really shouldn't be wasting bandwidth with your
whiny drivel.

I have a Ph.D in biochemistry and I wouldn't put myself at the bottom of
the intellectual gene pool. It's unfortunate that your good advice is lost
or ignored because of your insistence on starting your posts with an insult
to the person posting. You won't be taken seriously until you stop doing
it.

I doubt that he is even aware of what his automatic salutation says. Kind of
like someone walking around all day with his zipper down, or toilet paper
stuck to his shoe. More pathetic than offensive.

LOL! Sorry dimwit, if you don't have the intellect to determine the difference
between a *real* insult (your "salutation" in your post here) and one just
being silly (my "salutation"), then maybe you should take your delicate
sensibilities and idiocy to a more 'dimwit friendly' NG. When you whine this
much, do you have your mommy wipe the tears from your eyes and sing to you?

I couldn't care less what the hell Ph.D's you have, I've met more intelligent
people with Ph.D's that don't have a lick of common sense, and now you're
inluded. The "insult" you and lamertame seem to be whining so much about is not
used as an "insult" you dumbass. Stop and actually 'think' about it. You're the
*only* two whiny babies who've ever bitched and moaned about the thing in the
whole approximate year I've been using it.
Your pissy little whinings over something so trivial is what's not being taken
seriously, since all it's done for me is provide a couple good laughs at both
of your expenses. Your kind of idiocy and superiority complex always gives me a
humor break. Tell me, oh humorless and common sense-less one...what 'pen' did
you use to make your post? What a maroon.

ROTFLMAO!! Thanks for proving the 'puddle end of the gene pool' you came from
was more your own piss than water.

Most important point before knowing what to advise is : How are they
connected? Old ones connecting via the parallel port, or via some
'special' SCSI based card are likely not to have drivers that XP will
accept.

But if they are USB - and new ones most probably are - then in driver
installation it is very important to do things in the right order.

If you have a half successful installation, you should start by
uninstalling it in Device Manager (and I would prefer to eliminate
references in the registry, but lets leave hat for the moment). Then
shut down, and have the device unplugged from the machine. Boot up,
and have the driver disk in the driver, where you know where to find the
..inf file for the XP drivers when asked. Only then do you apply power
to the device and only *then* plug in the USB cable. At that point you
should get 'New Hardware found' and you can say 'I have drivers on a
disk', and browse to the inf file for them

Some devices now ask you to run their own install program and reboot
before plugging in, but the crucial point in installing USB devices is
to 'hot plug' them in

John im with you. The other maroons can go shov it. Were
the top of the genpool and there the bottom. Pis on them

Dear Alex,

Thank you for your informed response.

The scanners all were USB....as an aside I have an USB HDD storage device
that I tried it in all 6 ports as a test and it functioned in each.

Back to the scanners......I worked through all of your recommendations many
times both following email tech support offered instructions and on my
own.....even followed instructions to remove registry entries....after
backup of course. Initially and after reinstalls the "New Hardware found"
message ALWAYS appeared.....it even listed the name of the device.

The discrepancy seems to be (or at least implied by tech supports) is that
XP is not loading the drivers into the correct file (directory?) because
when I check the "Device Manager" the scanner is there but it is listed in a
category named "Unknown"......not in "Cameras or Scanners". Again the
implication is that the devices and software all were loaded as necessary
but XP doesn't know where to put the driver. Maybe I'm looking for a magic
pill but I am hoping to find a way to lead (force) it to load to the right
location.

Thanks again.

Marian
