Homepge set to 'about:blank'

Hello all,

My computer has somehow become infected with some
adware/spyware after months of keeping it clean.

Something has changed on my computer making my homepage
set at 'about:blank' and when I start Internet Explorer I
see a nasty search page and I get lots and lots of pop-ups
from it. No matter how I try to reset my homepage, it
remains at about:blank. The trusted software I have always
used for finding spyware and detecting virus' are not
finding the cause of this.

After searching the net I have found many solutions to
what seams to me a highly infectious problem, but they all
require the downloading of dodgy sounding software to
search for the problem and help editing the computers
registry to delete the infection. From my research I have
found that the cause is the changing or copying of a .dll
file which controls the homepage by the 'virus'. As I am
far from being a computer expert I am very concerned about
downloading more software which may just add to my
troubles.

Can anyone give me a solution to this problem?

Many thanks in advance,

Dan.

ps. Please let me know if what I have said makes no sense
and I will try to describe things again.
