I'm about to upgrade my four PCs from XP Home to XP Pro - any
suggestions/hints/pitfalls?

Hi Paul,

Nothing too bad, but just use common sense:

- Disable av software as well as any other unneeded applications before
starting
- Recommend that you uninstall any CD writing software as well, you can
reinstall afterwards
- Ensure you have necessary drivers for any hardware that is not natively
supported
- Dump \temp folders and the Recycle Bin before starting
- If the machines came preinstalled, check with the manufacturer about any
known issues with upgrading

Make sure you have 4 copies/licenses of xp pro. If you dont activation will
only work on one computer and the rest will fail. Four computers = four
copies of xp pro(according to the eula and activation).
IMO - I would do clean installs and not upgrade installs.
Make sure you have all needed drivers.

Did I miss something here? People are talking about needing to to a clean
install from XP Home to XP Pro? And needing to check driver compatability?
Name me a driver that is compatible with XP Home, but not with XP Pro, please?
OK, there's probably one somewhere, but name another. <G> Home to Pro is the
easiest and most straightforward of any Windows upgrade. Of course, one should
back up vital files just in case, run disk cleanup, turn off Anti-virus and
defrag, but reformat and clean install to go from Home to Pro, puleeeze!

Cheers,

Just back up your data before you do it. There shouldn't be any
problems, but that doesn't mean there won't be.

There is no need to do any clean install, and the point about
uninstalling CD Burning software is not necessary, except that it may
need the internal IMAPI service disabling over again afterward. It
matters when upgrading earlier versions where the CD Burning software
installed may well not be XP compatible, but anything installed on Home
will be the same as for Pro

The point on drivers will only arise if you have installed an up-to-date
driver for a device (say a video card, as most likely) that is *not*
certified. The upgrade *may* then revert to its own, earlier but
certified, version. Just have the download that was originally used to
update the driver handy so you could reinstall after if needed.

Upgrading from Home to Pro is perhaps the simplest upgrade ever with
Microsoft Windows because all you are really doing is adding a few
additional components and functions to the existing Home version.

There is absolutely no need for doing a clean install as advocated by
one of the responders.

Just follow the advice that Rick gave you and make sure that you have
a current backup of all of your essential data, as you always should
when making changes to the computer.

Good luck
