Home -> Student Pro XP and licensing question

My son just brought back a set of CD's from the University of Texas
bookstore (not plugging UT) which included Office 2002 and XP Pro. it was
cheap to say the least. Here is the problem: We want to replace an old
copy of OEM "Home XP" that I got a couple of years ago when I bought a cpu
and a hard drive from a parts house and they sold me the OEM copy on the
same order. I just looked at this new PRO CD and do not see the word
"upgrade" anywhere. Can I assume it can just install over the home edition
without him losing his 2 years accumulation of stuff he shouldnt have
downloaded?

In addtion, I want to use the original XP home on another system. The
choice is either an old but good notebook that has a P120, 96mb of memory
and win98 (can minimum requirements be overridden with an install option?)
or I can give it to a nephew that has a win98 system with a K6-III type
motherboard and 256mb. The original CPU and disk that I bought with the XP
Home are long gone.

FWIW, we have had to call in and actually talk to a real person at microsoft
2 times in the last month and 4 times in the last year for this one system.
This was due to changing out video boards (twice), the cpu once, the hard
drive (twice). Can I assume I get a new start with the student version of
XP Pro and wont have to telephone in for a while? I dont mind the connect
over the internet, but when we have to repeatedly read off that 42 digit
number it gets tiring quick. In case there is any doubt, I own 4 copies of
full price XP (2 pro, 2 home) and this is the first "free" one I have picked
up. I say free because it only cost $5 USD. What about my nephew if I give
him the old copy of XP Home, will he run into trouble registering it?

You may have a few licensing problems. The academic version is restricted
for use by a student or faculty member. OEM versions of XP are tied to the
original computer they are installed.
As for the two systems you referenced, the laptop is far below the minimum
requirements, and the K6-III system will probably be better off with 98.

Your school district needs to work out a better deal with Gates. The prices
below range from $5 to $9.50 USD which is significently down-under the
AUD$185 you quoted.

I think the poker hand that UT was dealing was to offer free linux and
requiring all their students in the UT system ( about 50,000 total) to have
it and use it. I have never been to Austrailia, but it must be somewhat
like texas as I often see posts on tx.motorcycles from downunder.

Yes. The Full version can also do an upgrade (only the OEM
version can not).

In addtion, I want to use the original XP home on another
system.

Since that's an OEM version, the terms of the license prevent you
from doing that. An OEM version is permanently tied to the first
computer it's installed on, and it can never be moved to another.
