Home Office Network & ICS problems

G

Guest

I downloaded the MS Home Office wizard thingy. I want to do the Wired
Network With Computer As Gateway model.

Here is the setup I have and the steps I've taken...

2 computers (THERESA & BUDDY) in the same room.
THERESA has XP Professional
BUDDY has XP Home

THERESA has two internal NICS.
NIC 1 connects to my DSL modem via a network cable.
NIC 2 connects to a Netgear 4 port Hub

Other computer is called BUDDY. It has one internal NIC
NIC connects to the Netgear 4 port Hub

I have internet connectivity on THERESA
I ran the Home Office Network Configuration Wizard and indicated THERESA has
the Internet Connection and wants to share it.
Burned the disk.
Installed and ran the disk on BUDDY.

No internet connectivity on either machine.
Reboted THERESA. Internet connectivity OK.
Rebooted BUDDY. No internet connectivity on BUDDY.
Can't see BUDDY on THERESA
Can't see THERESA on BUDDY

I've done these blasted steps a dozen different times. Is there something
I"m doing wrong? I'm curious...how does the NIC on BUDDY obtain an IP
address? It's supposed to be in the 192.168.0.0/24 range but it doesn't seem
to obtain one. I tried to physically set it to 192.168.0.2 but that doesn't
work.

I have switched out and double checked all the cables and they are working
properly. Same with the hub. When BUDDY is plugged into the hub, I get a
connection light but no "activity" (i.e., flashing)

Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong.

Start by showing us "ipconfig /all" from both computers.

OK, you have a cross-over cable running between THERESA and Buddy. Which card
on THERESA is the cable plugged into? The 3Com or Netgear?

When you run the Network Setup wizard on THERESA, do you indicate which card the
Internet service is coming in on, and which the service is shared on? Neither
card shows signs of Internet service, nor ICS, being associated with it. I see
the PPP adapter being created, but that's it.

I'm not using a cross-over cable between THERESA & BUDDY. The NIC in THERESA
is cabled to the Netgear Hub. The NIC in Buddy is cabled to the Hub.

Can I eliminate the hub and just use a cross-over cable between the two NICs?

During the Network Setup I have three choices:
Local Area Connection 4 - This is the NIC cabled to the DSL Modem
Local Area Connection 2 - This is the NIC cabled to the Netgear Hub

I choose Local Area Conenction 4.

One thing that I just noticed in my Network Connections is "Dial-up"
CenturtyTel DSL Connection".

DOHH, sorry about that. Well, a regular (straight-thru) cable coming from the
hub is the same thing effectively. Assuming that the hub, and both cables
connecting it, are all good.

What type of Internet service do you have? Is the "CenturtyTel DSL" a PPPoE
connection? Try choosing that as the service connection. And remember to pick
Option 1, and to select Local Area Connection 2 to share the connection.

Yes it is a PPPoE connection. That is the one I choose and I choose
Connection 2. Still not luck.

Last night I unplugged everything from the hub. Moved the DSL cable to
BUDDY. installed the Centurytel software on BUDDY. Got internet connectivity
in order to download all the Windows and other software updates I needed.
I'll need to uninstall this before I ship the computer off to my friend.

I am thinking about trying the Home Network connection using BUDDY as the
host computer tonight. I'll let you know what happens.

I am so frustrated with this. All the documentation makes it sound so easy
and yet there is nothing I can find that I'm doing wrong. I manage a large
network at my company so I'm somewhat computer saavy. Grrrr! I really would
like to be able to do this. I repair and fix software problems for family and
friends and it would make it more convenient for me to have internet access
on these machines.

Chuck, thank you so much for all your help. I'll let you know what happens
tonight.

I couldn't try it in reverse (BUDDY serving as the ICS host) because Buddy
does not have a diskette drive; only a CD burner. There would be no way to
create the network setup diskette for THERESA.

You don't need to make a diskette. Just run the Network Setup Wizard on each
computer, independently.
1) Get Internet service working on Buddy.
2) Run the Network Setup Wizard on Buddy, and choose Option #1.
3) Run the Network Setup Wizard on Theresa, and choose Option #2.
4) Run "ipconfig /all" on both computers, and post here.

Well, dang it. It's too late now. I had to box up BUDDY and ship him off to
my friend.

The next PC I bring into the house I will try again.

Thanks for all your help.

i have a similar issue.

I have 2 pcs, 1 connects to the net with dial up isdn, and they are connect
via a router which effectively works as a switch (connecting the modem to the
router is not an option)

Well if i run the ICS wizard on the server machine, it assigns the
192.168.0.1 Ip

My router (and hence my pcs) use an IP in the 192.168.123.xxx range

Q: i can change the router (domain? subnet? not sure of the corect
expression) to 192.168.0.xxx, should I?

When i go to dialupconnection\properties\advanced\ICS\settings
I get a bunch of services, is there a problem if i enable them? When i run
ICS wizard the top 3 (DHCP 67, DHCP 68, DNS) are not checked anymore, what do
they do? Should I enable them?

Any information would be apreciated
