Networking with seperate broadband connections

I am running XP Pro and have moved in with a buddy. We
both use the fastest cable connection available in out
area and want to keep that. He runs a LAN with about 5
systems for gaming with friends and we want to connect my
system to the network. The problem is, if i enable the NIC
for the LAN then XP automatically uses his internet
connection. I have the network connection wizard and
specified one NIC as network only and the other as
internet only but it never lets me run it this way. Is
there a way to set this up so I keep using my broadband
connection and still connect to his network?

If the Network Setup Wizard created a network bridge between the two
connections, right click and delete the network bridge.

Specify a "metric" value for each network connection, assigning a
lower value for your broadband connection and a higher value for the
connection to your buddy's LAN. That will tell XP to always use your
broadband connection for Internet access:

To assign a metric to a network connection:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the desired connection.
3. Click Properties | Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Properties | Advanced.
5. Un-check "Automatic metric".
6. Enter a number between 1 and 9999 for the "Interface metric".
