I am new to this field and just beginning to learn about computers. My house is
wired with cat 5,currently only one computer is running.I am now in the
process
of adding 4 computers, and confused by suggestions on how to set-up the
network.
Do I need a switch and router?A switch only or router only?
Thanks.

It simply depends on how your connected to the public internet. In my case I have a cable ISP and
also have my home completely wired with CAT5. In my case I use a combination 4-Port Broadband
Router/802.11b/g Wireless Access Point to both share my cable broadband ISP and provide local
network connectivity, both wired (100 Mbps Ethernet) and wireless (802.11b/g), to clients. I use a
Buffalo WBR-G54 for that. Since I have 10 CAT5 drops throughout the house I also use an eight port
switch so all of the 10 drops are connected to my home LAN and the internet through the router. The
switch and router are connected together as noted on this page...

Prior to this setup I used ICS on one XP Pro box and the switch to both access my old dialup ISP and
allow other clients to access both the local LAN and the internet...

Daniel,

If your internet service will support it, a NAT router (which will include a
switch) is what you need.

Here are a few websites with useful tutorials:

Hi.

There are variety of ways to have a Network and share the Internet, the
nature of the precise setting depends on how the whole system looks like.

The content of the following links will provide you with a tutorial about
the issue. It is short and to the point.

Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing -

Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...? -

The pages above were written by me ages ago. You might ignore the prices and
Brand recommendations. The principles however are still the same.
