I am having a problem with my home networking. I have had it working
a couple of times before, but all of a sudden it craps out and my
other computers are not accessable. I am running one WinXP machine
and two Win98se machines downstairs. My son has 4 (yes 4) computers
in his room. One WinXP, one WinME and a Win98se laptop as well as an
IMAC. All of his computers are are networked together and working
fine. I have the cable modem downstairs with a DLink router
attached. My computers are all attached directly to the router. I
have one cat5 running upstairs to my sons room which is attached to a
DLink switch. His computers branch off that switch. He can access
the internet and share files with all the computers, both upstairs and
downstairs, and the single printer on one of my Win98 machines. The
problem is that none of the other machines can connect with my WinXP
machine and I can't get it to connect to the other machines.
When setting up this machine, which way should I go.
1. This computer connects directly th the internet. The other
computers on my network connect to the Internet through this computer.
(This used to work when I had dial-up connection)
2. this computer connects to the internet through another computer on
my network or through a residential gateway.
3. This computer connects to the internet directly or through a
network hub. Other computers on my neetwork also connect to the
internet directly or through a hub.
I am figuring it must be either number 2 or number 3, but what is the
difference. When I do number 3, it tells me that the network
configuration i selected is not recommended because more than one
computer connects directly to the internet and there is no reliable to
share files between them while protecting my computer from internet
security threats.
In my network connections window I am still showing the following
Dial-up account as disconnected.
A network bridge 12 enabled
Local area connection 3 enabled, bridged, WAN network driver
Local area connection enabled, bridged, Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI
Fast ethernet NIC
Does this look right so far.
By the way, I also get some kind of spooler error when setting up as
well. This happens when I run the setup that says This computer
connects to the internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.
Can anyone please help me with this SNAFU? Or is it a FUBAR?
