I am trying to network a new computer running windows xp with a computer running windows98 se. I have the windows xp computer set up with internet access via a dsl modem on an onboard etherent connection and have installed a second etherent card in the XP computer. I have also installed an ethernet card in the win98 computer. The problem is I keep getting the error message that the network cable is unplugged when trying the network wizard. I have tried three different cat 5 cables (2 -50 footers and 1 - 10 footer), two different ethernet cards and even tried a usb to ethernet adapter card in the windows 98 computer. NOTHING WORKS!!! I swapped the ethernet cards in both computers and they work fine in the new computer when hooked up to the dsl modem.
The DSL modem is dual connect so originally I had the XP computer configured for the internet thru the usb port and only had one ethernet port in the xp computer and a ethernet card in the old computer.
When running the diagnostic program that came with the card (networkeverywhere 10/100 PCI) in the old computer everything passes but the Loopback or whatever the test for connection with another computer is. The indicator lights on the ethernet card are not lit on the old computer. I contacted the mainboard manufacturer to make sure there was not some special setting or jumper i needed to use and they said no the card should work. The mainboard is a BIOSTAR M6TWC (circa 1999) running a celeron 400 processor with 192 meg of ram
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
