home networking between 2 pcs not working

I have an adsl modem connected to my pc and I have networked with 2nd pc -
both running xp professional. Everything was working ok but now it is not.
Both pc's can surf web with no problems. But pcs cannot browse each others
network places. PC 1 goes into (not responding mode) 2nd pc gets message that
it may not have permission.

Debra,

I don't know how you did these tests, but if the network adapter
really failed then it's no suprise that the network isn't
working.

Once you got around that problem, you can use
http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm to solve any further
networking problems.

when you ping your other computer and says timed out, that means you are
unable to connect to your other computer. that means a firewall is preventing
you from accesssing to your other computer. if you are using a third party
firewall like norton or what have you. configure your third party firewall to
let your computer 1 be able to access computer 2 and vice versa. you dont
have to disable the firewall. i had aproblem like that similar to yours, i
just configured my norton to allow home network.

How DID you do those tests?
I have a very similar problem (see my post on 10/17 ) and it would be
helpful to get some diagnostics.
