I'm running a desktop hard-wired to a Linksys Wireless-G
router, and a laptop with a Linksys wireless-g PCMCIA
card. Both computers are running Norton Internet
Security 2004 and both computers can surf the net just
fine, but even with file and print sharing turned on, I
can't get them to see each other to share files across
the network. I suspect I'm missing a setting in windows
because even if I disable NIS on both systems, I still
cannot get them to communicate with each other.

Does anyoen have a step-by-step for setting this stuff
up? The network wizard in XP didn't help.

FWIW, I had it working a few months ago, but re-installed
the OS on the desktop and have not been able to get it
working since.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I suspect that XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall is enabled,
which will block file and printer sharing. Here are two ways to
disable it:

1. Run the Network Setup Wizard and tell it that the computer connects
to the Internet through a residential gateway (router).

or:

2. Right-click the network connection that connects to the router,
click Properties | Advanced, and un-check the Internet Connection
Firewall box.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try pinging each computer from the
other, both by IP address and by name. For example:

ping 192.168.1.101
ping computer

If all pings fail, the most likely explanation is that NIS is blocking
access. If pinging by IP address succeeds and pinging by name fails,
make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

I ran the setup wizard and told it I was connected
through the resedential gateway. It still wouldn;t see
the other PC. Do I need to do this on both computers
independently, or should the networking disk generated by
the first automatically set up the other?

Also, when I right-click the connection, it opens the
connection screen, but there is no advanced tab.

I'm completely stumped....

Yes, run the Wizard on both computers. It doesn't matter whether you
run the Wizard directly or by using the disk made on the other
computer.

If there's a network bridge on either computer, right-click and delete
the network bridge. That should make the Advanced tab come back.

Did you try the ping tests that I gave? Did you enable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP as I indicated?
