Home network

I am try to set a home network, I have DSL modem and network hub. With both
computers running XP home, both can acess the web but can't see each
computer. The subnet mask is different on each computer. What can I do
network them together

How do you setup TCP/IP? Why do they are in the different subnet?

You need to add a router to your network instead of a network hub. Right
now each PC is getting a different IP address from your ISP - aside from the
fact that this is a very hazardous configuration (both PCs are directly
exposed to the Internet) they will never be able to network with each other
since they'll have IP addresses in different ranges.

I have a wireless router, but my computers still both get ip addresses from
my isp. How can I set it to have the router get the ip from the isp?

Thanks!

But if you have a DSL modem with multiple outputs (Zyxel Prestige 650HW-31),
is there no way of setting up the network with two XP computers and a printer
using that? I can log in to the modem web site and set/see a DHCP table etc.

Either your router has its network address translation (NAT) and DHCP
servers disabled, or it's not a router but an access point.

Define "multiple outputs" please. If you mean one Ethernet port and one USB
port, that's not a router and cannot be made to be one. If it has multiple
Ethernet ports then it may or may not be a router. But in any case the
device itself MUST be a router or else you'll get ISP addresses instead of
local addresses and won't be able to network.

Ok, thanks. My Zyxel modem has four ethernet ports and I plan to use two for
my XP computers and one for a printer. The modem setut web site displays:
Server DHCP, Client IP Pool starting address=192.168.1.33, Size of Client IP
pool=32, Primary DNS Server=Secondary=0.0.0.0, Remote DHCP Server=N/A,IP
address=192.168.1.1, IP Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0, RIP Direction=Both, RIP
Version=RIP-1, Multicast=None, Computers IP address=192.168.1.33 and .34

ipconfig /all shows Primary DNS-suffix=[empty], Nodtype=Unknown on pc1 and
Hybrid on pc2, IP-routing activated=No, WINS-proxy acivated=No, DHCP
activated=Yes, Autoconfiguration activated=Yes, IP address and Subnet Mask=as
above, Standard Gateway=DHCP server=DNS server=192.168.1.1

I have a Windows Network setup but when I try to click on it in the W
Explorer it times out with an error message like "not available"

I can't see if my problem is in the set up network, in the modem setup or
elsewhere. Any hints on what to look for?

You do have a router, and the basic network configuration looks fine. What
about firewalls on the computers - Windows firewall, third-party firewalls,
or none?

Thats it! Turned out I had both Windows firewall and Norton Internet Security
firewall turned on (guess I shouldn't have them both). Switched both off and
it worked fine with file sharing so I began to look inte the settings. After
adding the internal IP addresses (192.168.1.33) to the trusted zone in Norton
and leaving the Windows firewall swithed off it works just fine. Next step is
to add the printer, haven't trided yet.

Thank you!
