I am attempting to set up File and Printer Sharing on two
home computers, both are running XP Pro and have
identical ethernet cards. No matter what I do, I have a
message that a network cable is unplugged. I have tried
three different cables with the same results. All
diagnostics say that everything is working properly. Is
it possible that XP does not support direct connection?
Do I need to get a hub? Is there a configuration issue
that I have overlooked? I have allowed Setup Wizard to
auto configure addresses.

Yep,
That's the mesage you get when you use a straight cable
for a direct connection between two computers - I used
one by mistake last week.
