Home LAN : XP Pro SP2 - passwords ? Master browser ?

C

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Here I am again ! I'm using Outpost Agnitum Pro firewall. I've stopped the
firewall on my machine and have re-run the wizard and have re-enabled file
and printer sharing. No joy. 1) The new laptop can still see all the my
network places and can happily browse everyone's documents 2) The XP Pro
desktop, and host (Agnes) can see only the new Dell in the workgroup but can
see and browse the old laptop (Peter) in my network places and 3) the old
laptop can see and browse everyone. I've just ran cdiag.cmd on the old
laptop and all pings work. No error messages. There were no errors when I
ran the network wizard. The browser service is still disabled on the new
laptop. Should I enable it. ? Should I run the fixes you suggested in your
earlier posts ?

The answer is probably staring me in the face. What to do, a system restore
and start from scratch ?

Cheers

Pete

Pete,

Is Simple File Sharing enabled, or disabled, on D7285M1J and Agnes?

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer
from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list.

You said some time ago that you had "identical passwords set on all accounts,
guests included, on all computers". Did you setup a common, non-Guest, full
(administrative) account on all computers, with identical password?

Pete,

What happens if you create a shortcut in MNP to "\\D7285M1J\New Dell"?

Chuck,

It worked ! Why, I don't know and why did I have to create a shortcut ? I
never had to before, they just "appeared" automatically ! I still something
fishy has gone on here but time to move on. A big thanks for all your help !

Pete,

That's a start. But don't quit yet, please.

Chuck,

These articles appear to refer to problems regarding new shortcuts
automatically created when you use network shortcuts. I don't have that
problem. However, the idea of having mapped drives is appealing. That said,
I'm so tired of piddling around with network problems, I don't have the
strength to look at this now. Today, I have another problem : every time I
try to use the battery on the new laptop, the screen blanks out and will not
restart meaning I have to take the battery out to restart the pc. A pain in
the **** !

Cheers

Pete,

Under Control Panel - Power Options, look at your power schemes. I'll bet you
can find a setting there that needs tweaking.

Chuck,

Nope, been there, got the tee-shirt. I've emailed Dell, I reckon there's a
problem with their hardware somewhere. Have a nice one!
