Home LAN help please

Running XP SP2 on a notebook and a desktop connected by
crossover cable Ethernet. Wizard did a good job of setting
up the LAN once I discovered ZoneAlarm must be shut down and
both computers must be logged on to the same user account
and password. (Both computers have a user account for
internet and different one for other stuff.)

Then I used Wizard to set up a dial-up internet connection
on one computer. That didn't work and now I cannot get
Wizard to restore the original non-internet setup. The
computers can ping their own IP address, but cannot ping
each other. Map Network Drive Browse sees the workgroup but
not the other computer.

Prior to the installation of SP2 I had no such problem. Is
there a documentation URL you can recommend for this
networking neophyte's education on how to deal with SP2
Home-LAN difficulties?

Check that the workgroup name is the same on both machines, double check and
make sure it is a crossover cable and not a patch cable, check that your ip
address is the same bar the last number which needs to be different and make
sure that the subnet address is the same on both machines.

Main problem I see is that they cannot ping each other so either summit
above is not right or your firewalls are blocking the ping request. Once you
can ping the other machine and visa-versa then you should be able to do what
you wish, although I'm sure that windows set's the default ip address to
192.168.0.1 on the machine with net connection if shared??

SP2 gets the blame for EVERYTHING !
I had identical set-up (with SP2 on both) via the wizard, no probs with it,
at all. Have now migrated to wireless, for flexibility.
Just a thought - are you setting up new dial-up connection on master or
slave pc? And, are both pc's booted when you try it?
Have no experience of dial-up on networks (have cable, always-on) but
perhaps the dial-up needs to be on the "master" pc.
Don't know if a notebook, once "networked" as slave (logical set-up) can be
configured to run stand-alone ISP access (should be possible, you can change
default accounts).
Your prime objective is to get your network back. Delete the existing one on
both, set up a new one via the wizard, is my suggestion.
