I have one account on my laptop and I added a password to
it. Dunno why. I have been installing many
things(bluetooth...) I do not know what the problem is but
when I boot up it just sits there with the blue screen and
the Windows XP logo. Can not even boot to safe mode... same
problem. It attempts to boot but when the blue screen
appears, it stops. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?
It loads a few programs such as my firewall. But after
that nothing. If I can get to a restore window I have a
restore point a few days back I could use. But I cannot
get failsafe to go? Can I do it thru Emulated Dos or what?
I need help!!

Thanx,
Zak

Presumably holding down F8 on startup, and then
selecting 'last known good configuration' doesn't work,
and you've tried all the 3 safe modes or any of the other
modes as a last resort(if you don't get this stuff by
pressing F8 then I guess that's out)? After this, you're
into the windows recovery console, or doing a repair
using the xp disk I guess, and since my own experiences
with the recovery console were pathetic I don't think
I'll advise further!

I have tried booting (F8) with all the options. I tried
safe mode, Restore, etc, they all hang at the same place.
I booted with the CD and have reached the recovery console
but I cannot do a system restore from there. I have tried
disabling a few drivers and still nothing. What can I do?
I would like to just do a system restore but I cannot get
there? Or does anyone know how to upgrade XP Home to
Professional w/o losing data. I treid booting off the prof
cd and installing Prof. But I can only overright
mydocuments, windows directories, and programs. I do now
want to reinstall all my programs. I just want to upgrade
not a clean install??

Any ideas?

Obviously, you should have backed up your data first. Although you can
try a Repair Install, I honestly think you're going to wind up doing a
clean install (formatting the drive first). To save data, slave the
drive in a different machine and copy the data over to be burned onto a
cd-r. If you can't do this, take the machine to a good local computer
repair shop (not a CompUSA or BestBuy store). Here is a link to Repair
Installation instructions:
