Hitachi DVD

I Recently upgraded from 98SE to XP Home. everything works fine, except the
Hitachi DVD-R ( 12X) ATAPI. It reads & plays audio & video CDs, but when i
insert a DVD, it stays blank. I have a P3 133Mhz Maxtor HDD ( ?).

I have tried:

1. Different codecs & decoders , WinDVD ( X pack ), Windows MP10 etc
2. Downloading different decoders for Hitachi GD2500
3. Altered the IDE from DMA to PIO and vice versa

Nothing has worked. I also have a hardware 'VIA bus master IDE' refusing to
get installed now as it cant find an entry. I have a feeling that what i
need is a hardware decoder for the drive, but Windows tells me its the best
available. Microsoft troubleshooting hasnt helped. I noticed that plenty of
people ( in forums ) have had similar problems, so there must be simpler
solution lurking around somewhere, can anyone help ? I am not an expert in
these things, what i know is from trial and lots of errors. Would appreciate
if someone can help me with this.......

Thanks !

really really bad idea to 'upgrade' from one OS to another. I find
this even more important these days as going from a 9x to a 9x kernal
isn't too bad but from 9x to NT is not recommended.
I would do either a repair install of XP, or do a clean install.

I don't exactly understand what 'blank' means, but do you have a software
dvd player? WMP didn't used to play DVDs out of the box.

Is there possibly a firmware upgrade for the drive available from Hitachi?

Thanks guys !

Mac : I meant to say that the drive doesnt recognize DVDs. Even after i
insert a DVD in the drive and double-click on the e: ( my dvd drive ) it
says ' insert a cd '. WinDVD says 'NO DVD in Drive'.
O-chan : i looked in Hitachi's website, for the firmware upgrade, there isnt
one. i also tried in driverguide.com.
