Hit Counter

I've added a hit counter to my website, but I'm not seeing any digits once
published, instead the space says "hit counter". Does this have anything to
do with the FP Extensions being turned on at the server end?

And part two, am I forced to use one of the 4 or 5 styles offered in FP 2000
or could I use any font I want?

For the hit counter to work you must http publish to a server running
the FrontPage extensions.
File->Publish and the destination must be in the form
http://www.example.com

You can use a custom image - the digits are in an image, not text -
instead of the FrontPage offerings.
