Hit Counter is only FP component not working

I recently had a problem with my hosting company for which thew solution was
reinstalling Frontpage Extensions 2002 on the server side. When I brought up
my live site in Frontpage 2003 everything is working except the hit counter.
I have tried everything on this discussion topic: checked the index.html.cnt
file, erased and reinstalled the hit counter, etc., but for some reason the
counter stays stuck at 000001 and will not reset to my current number-190613.
The counter also does not register hits when I reload the home page. I have
published the page to another website with the same hosting company (although
a different server) and the counter works perfectly. I also have FP
Extensions 2002 on my hard drive and the counter works perfectly. What can I
do to fix this?

Sounds like write permissions are not properly enabled. Ask your host about
it.

Thanks, I will try asking them, although they know very little about
Extensions if you ask me. Why would everything else work and not the counter?
If the write permissions were not correct, wouldn't I have problems doing
anything that involved a web component? Is there a test I can run myself to
see if this is the case? I have noted elsewhere that counters are controled
by server extensions (not Extensions 2002) could this be an issue?
Thanks

As Thomas said, make sure the server has "server write" permissions set for the _private
folder and it's files.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the advice. By "permissions" are you referring to 755 setting on
the cmode? That one folder is set to 700, but it is the same on another
website on which the counter works perfectly. Is there another setting
besides that?
