Hit Counter how do I make it work?

G

Guest

I have a 2003 standard server SP1 running IIS. Front page extensions are on.
It hosts one website which was created in FP 2003.

The website was also created on that same server and published to inetpub.

The spot where I inserted the hit counter can be seen as a box containing an
X.

How can I make the hit counter appear, work and be visiblt to visitors?

How can I have a hit counter that only I can see and is invisible to visitors?

How did you publish and what was the destination URL?

Hi Phil:

I am positive FP extensions are enabled and the FP hit counter does not
work. Any suggestions to make it work rather than use an external hit
counter?

How can I make the hit counter invisible to visitors, for my own
information?

As stated I created the site on the server and published it to inetpub.

Site workes great. Just no hit counter visible or invisible.

I'd rather not use any outside hit counter.

The only thing I can suggest is delete it and put another counter back in. I
have come across problems if after inserting a hit counter if you then try to
move it in anyway in design view the link seems to break, this then shows
with a red cross in white box on the web. Hope taking it out and putting a
new one in works. you can reset the new counter to carry on from where the
old one was.
Cheers
Phil

You have not answered my question, please provide an example of how you enter the destination that
you publish to and from where your published from.

I open the site in FP on the server and I click on publish and select the
destination as C: inetpub on the same hard drive the server runs on. Then it
publishes. All changes show up on the site.

If this is the wrong information I am probably not understanding you question.

You are bypassing the FP extensions, which is why the hit counter is not working, nor will any other
FP run-time component, such as forms, etc.

You have to publish the site from it's current disk-based location to a server based location via a
format like this: http://www.domainname.com

I didn't know that! Thank you.

I will give it a try by importing the site with FP onto my workstation and
then publishing it up to the URL.

I just imported the site with FP onto my workstation. When it was done I
noticed it didn't look exactly the same as it does when I work on it on it's
server. The dynamic web template for the site was not there so I couldn't
put the hit counter on the dynamic web template. I also was not asked for my
username and password.

I'm sorry to bother you guys with this again, but it looks like I am close
to accomplishing what needs to be done.

I will try this when I can go to the webserver late today.

Thank you, all, for your help.

You can not use the import function as it will only get what is seen when the site is viewed in a
browser, you need to open it in FP at it original location and then publish to http://...

Hello Steve,

Based on my research, the hit counter cannot be seen on the web page could
be caused by different reasons. To narrow down this issue, I recommend you
try the following methods:

Method 1
============
If URLscan utility is installed in the server, this issue may occur. The
URLscan is blocking the FrontPage hitcounter. To work around this issue,
please try the following steps:

1. Remove the urlscan.dll from IIS.
2. Try to reconfigure the URL scan. If this cannot be done, please try
uninstalling and reinstalling the URL Scan from the server.
3. Also try the following KB article.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318290

Method 2
=======
Please remove the groups named web_anonymous and web_application from NTFS
permissions as these are denied execute and write permission by default
when IIS lockdown tool is installed. Also edit any filters installed on the
server to allow ".cnt" or if possible completely remove the filter when not
required.

Method 3
=======
Get access and view the _private folder and see if the pagename_cnt file
has a red x, if not it may be corrupted. Remove the hit counter and delete
the _cnt for the file name of the page in the _private folder, then
reinsert the hit counter and test.
Please also try a new page and insert a new hit counter to check the
result.

Method 4
=======
The FrontPage server extensions may be not functioning properly. Please
Re-install server extensions and then check for the updates from the
Microsoft site.

Method 5
=======
A related issue to this is that there could maybe a virus is on the server.
--> Nimda virus. Please use your Anti-virus program to scan any potential
viruses on your computer.
More information about NIMDA, please see the link below:

<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/alerts/info/nimda.mspx >

I hope this helps.

For the other question: "How can I have a hit counter that only I can see
and is invisible to visitors?", I am afraid there is no such a built-in
feature that can achieve this goal for the time being. However, we are
very interested in your thoughts and opinions for improvements that we can
make to provide the features and functionality you and your customers would
like to see. Please take a moment to submit a wish for this to our
Feedback department. This is a way that let the developers know what you
would like to be able to do and/or see added in future versions:

The web must be published to the web server, not to a file-system folder.
The publish address must be of the form
http://www.example.com/
or http://127.0.0.1/ if the website is the server's default website.
or http://ipaddress/ (which may not work - depends on how the FPextensions
were installed and configured, and whether Host Headers are in use or not.)

One method of hiding the counter is at
www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/hidden-hit-counter.htm , the count can be
viewed by opening the web in FP and checking the counter file in the
_private folder.
A better method is to use the IIS logs instead of any hit counter.

Glad to hear you got it working!
