I have placed a hit counter on my home page, but it slows down the download
time of the page...is this normal?

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

no.

post the url for the website

The FrontPage Hit Counter, or a 3rd party hit counter?
If it's 3rd party, yes, that's normal, because it's pulling it from another
website.

Yes, this is normal. The server has to:
Open and read a file
Update the file
Close the file
Generate an image (to display the number)
Place the image on the page and then send the page to the browser.
Which does take longer than
send the page to the browser.

T

Tom Willett

I don't see a hit counter.

Most of your images aren't showing, either. Apparently you didn't first
import them into a folder in your FP web before inserting and saving on a
page.

Thanks for your replies....the counter is there, it just takes about 10
seconds to download, which in turn makes my word art at the top of the page
take a long time to appear. I tried removing the counter, and replacing it,
then saving it and uploading it, but no difference, and the counter is still
not incrementing...as for the graphics on the site, I am changing those as
well because for whatever reason, they are not working properly....thank
you!! and as for my contact page, why aren't the forms working??

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

Could be some other things happening, like your background image is 110K,
that may slow thangs down a bit.
How are you publishing your site...maybe you wacked out the FP extensions?
What's not working about your contact form? It's not setup to email you if
thats what you mean, or is it not collecting info to your file?

Also if you are on a linux/unix server you should remove all spaces from
file & folder names (they will appear as %20).

I don't think it's the background image, because when I removed the counter
from the website and ran my url, it downloaded instantly, no slow downs at
all.
I'll try to reinstall the fp extensions again...
exactly how do I set up the contact forms to email me?? and collecting in
what file??
and no, I am not using linux/unix. I am using windows (asp)
thanks again....

You set up the form in Form Properties, right click within the form to
select.
You'll also see the file you have set to collect form info.

How are you Publishing to the server?

How to configure the FrontPage Server Extensions for Email Transport:
http://www.spiderwebwoman.com/tutorials/email_stuff.htm

Where are you using asp? The FP forms to email won't work if you're using
an asp extension instead of htm

FYI: All spaces should be removed from all file and folder names whether or not you are host on

Counter is displaying and incrementing correctly when viewed here. I'd
suggest you discontinue the vml graphics, what I'll assume you mean by
Word Art. That's not supported in all browsers and does not display for
me in my vml challenged Mac browsers. I also agree with the others- your
BG image is much too large in file size for use as a background.

Re your forms (plural)- If you mean on the contact page they look like
they were hand inserted by you and not done through FP. I think that was
your first mistake. There is an error in the html. I see what should be
2 forms - one for email the other to tell a friend. The first form is
not properly closed off before the other begins. You have one open form
tag <form> and 2 closers </form>

and totally OT- just had to say, I got a laugh at first glance at your
first form's input name. I'm sure that how I first read it is not what
you intended. Made me laugh just the same. Forgive me, I am blonde!

Chris, you made me laugh...sorry about that, I didn't realize how it read,
and didn't mean for it to show up...guess it could have been worse!! as for
word art, I'll try regular graphics...any suggestions?? why do they bother
including wordart if it doesn't work?? thanks again!!

G

I figured out the problem...I was publishing via ftp. Now I am publishing
through frontpage via http://mydomain.com and the counter works fine...now
that I have this figured out, is there a way to keep the counter from
incrementing every time I check the website myself? Or maybe count unique
visits to the site?? thanks again!!

Tom Willett

No, there is nothing you can do to change the hit counter. That's how it
functions.

WordArt is fine - If you are building an Intranet, and every user has
Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, and every user opens the browser to the
same size window, and every PC is running Windows.
This does happen, occasionally.

Any suggestions what to use other than word art?
