This is the page that comes up when I click on Internet Explorer.. My start
page has not changed it is still www.google.com. I don't use Internet
Explorer, I use Avant.. but there are times I have to use it.. and this is
very infuriating.. I have checked tools manage addons, and every one is
disabled, even the ones that were in use and are not now.. I also found a
cookie and have since deleted it.. I appreciate any
help with this.. I sure do want it to be gone! :) thanks Rainy

ps. I have in the past tried Hijack this, but the interface has changed, and
now It's very hard to understand..

Rainy,

You can relax. That's a legitimate Microsoft site.

One of the reasons you would need to use Internet Explorer
would be to get updates for Windows as well as other Microsoft
products such as Office. In the past you had to go to one web
site, Windows Update, to get your operating system updates and
another site, the Microsoft Office home page, to get updates
for Office and any of its component programs. Microsoft decided
to combine both under a new site, Microsoft Update.

I think you're being directed to that site because you disabled
all the add-ons. Also, if you look at Internet Properties,
Advanced page, there may be a check mark in the box next to
"Automatically check for updates to Internet Explorer".

You might want to enable the add-ons from Microsoft. Not all
ActiveX components are dangerous. I think you're going a little
overboard on the security issue. At the very least, enable
these:

Update Class
MUWebControlClass
Windows Genuine Advantage Tool

If that doesn't correct the problem you can safely follow the
instructions on that web page and click on the "Start now"
button.

Take a look here for more information:

Help keep your computer's defenses current with Microsoft
Update
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/update/msupdate_keep_current.mspx

Notice the web site pictured in step 1. Look familiar?

Good luck

Hi Nepatsfan..

I don't want that page to come up whether it is a legitimate site or not..
:) If I set my start page to Google.. then I would like to see Google
there..I don't know if there are more like me, but unless I ask for
something on my computer, I don't want it.. especially since it's so hard to
get rid of ..

The site came up before I disabled the addons, I was trying to get rid of it
so I disabled some.. but have re enabled the ones you suggested, and found
the check mark in automatic update and have removed it.. I don't want
anything automatic.. I am happy to go to my startup and find windows update
there and be able to pick and choose the updates I want or need.

I went to the link and found nothing that would help me get rid of it.. only
how to have updates automatic.. which I do not want..I might have overlooked
something.. that has been known to happen :)

And the page persists...

I do appreciate your response... and the time it took for you to write,
thanks.. Rainy

Rainy,

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you do the following?
Go to Start -> All Programs -> Internet Explorer.
Are you taken to Google or the Microsoft update page?

What this would test is whether you get sent to that update
site whenever you launch Internet Explorer or only if you use
the default Internet Explorer icon on the desktop.

If when you launch Internet Explorer from the Start Menu it
takes you to Google then you might want to do the following:
Go to Start -> All Programs and right click on Internet
Explorer.
In the menu that pops up select Send to -> Desktop (create
shortcut).
Now you can use that icon to launch IE instead of the default
one.

It's not the perfect solution, but it may be a way to get
around the issue you've raised.

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates is Notify me but do not
automatically Download or Install checked? Uncheck the recommended
option to Automatically Update.

OK, what antispyware and/or antivirus programs do you have
running on your computer? I seem to recall that some of them
protect your home page and will not allow it to be changed. For
instance, in Spybot S & D under Tools -> IE Tweaks you can
lock down your home page. You might want to check the programs
on your system to see if they have this capability.

Let's try one more thing. We know when you open up IE it goes
to the Microsoft update site. But what happens if you then
click on the Home Page icon on your toolbar? That's the one
that looks like a little house. Does it then take you to
Google? If so, take a look in the registry (Start -> Run ->
regedit.exe) for the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

In the right hand pane, is there an entry named FirstHomePage?
If so, right click on it and select Delete from the menu. Go
back and open Internet Explorer and see what page it opens.

The only other suggestion I can pass along would be to take a
look at this article and check on steps 6 through 9:
Home page setting changes unexpectedly, or you cannot change
your home page setting
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320159

Finally, if you haven't done so already, you might want to post
this question to the Internet Explorer newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

Good luck

Since you are NOT using IE why don't you go to the support site for your web
browser and ask there.

ok it's in the registry under fist home page.. when you say delete, do you
mean on the right pane, "first home page" or just the entry if that is
possible.. I think we are getting somewhere.. I have Adaware SE Professional
Yes when I click on the home icon, it takes me to google.. I just need to
know what exactly to delete..We are almost home free.. lol thanks
Nepatsfan.. this is very much appreciated.. Rainy

I think I found it.. I double click on first home page and delete the value
shown.. which is that microsoft page I don't want there.. right? thanks
rainy

Nepatsfan

Rainy,

OK, let's see if we're on the same page:
You found an entry in the right hand pane for First Home Page.
When double clicked a box pops up with the Microsoft Update
page listed in the "Value data" box.
If that's the case then go ahead and delete that value. That's
the one you want to get rid of.

Now comes the tricky part. There's a possibility that AdAware
Pro will want to keep resetting your home page back to the
Microsoft Update site. I'm familiar with the Personal (free)
version but not the Professional one. You're going to have to
poke around and see if you can locate a setting that locks your
home page. I'm guessing here but I think that may be part of
the Ad-Watch settings. It may even allow you to change the
entry to www.google.com. If you can't change the entry it would
probably be a good idea to turn that feature off and restart
your computer. Once you're system is up and running, see what
happens when you launch IE. If everything's behaving the way
you want, go back and reset AdAware to lock down the home page

YEAH!!!!! It's fixed now.. and you were so right, when you didn't get back
to me..:) I figured real life took your attention away from the tech group!
:) I took out all the check marks from Adaware..!!! since I had no way of
knowing which one was doing it... Went to run, typed in regedit, went to the
exact place you wanted me to go.. which was internet explorer Main, and
typed in www.google.com I exited regedit and rebooted, and when I came back
to my desktop and clicked on Internet Explorer it opened with google.. I am
so happy to get rid of that microsoft page.. and if it weren't for you I
would still have to be dealing with it.. Thanks so much... You have no idea
how much I appreciate your help.. Rainy

Rainy,

That's great! Glad to hear you're able to get the home page you
want.
