Hijacked Homepage

Running XP Home with Service Pack 2. Apparently I had a virus which Norton
removed but somehow my homepage is now their Symantec Home Page Assistance.
It tells me I can bring back my own homepage by clicking I E browser twice,
as shown below.

Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, a second window displaying the same
content will open.

1.. In the new window, browse to the site that you want as your home page.
2.. On the menu, click Tools > Internet Options.
3.. In the Home page section of the General tab, click Use Current. You
will now see the chosen URL appear in the Address textbox.
4.. Click OK to finish.
5.. Close all browser windows and then restart Internet Explorer.
Everything is okay except when I try to open IE it again brings up the
Symantec page.

Except for this my pc works fine. Microsoft has a convoluted fix that
involves the Registry and I am not good enough to fool with that.

Any ideas?

Stan

Hi Stan

If you're not confident about editing the Registry, then you're sensible
not to try. However, just looking at it won't hurt :) and will help us
to see what's going on.

The MS article you mention is KB320159:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320159
Can you have a look at the values it mentions and tell us what they are?

You need to see if you have a key called:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
and if you do, whether there are entries in the right pane (values)
called ResetWebSettings and/or HomePage.

If you post back with this information and the address you would like
for your home page, if you'd like I'll post a script for you to save as
a .reg file that will make the settings change for you.

Thank you very very much for your interest and effort. This is the kind of
help I was hoping for and expecting rather than the sarcastic reply I got
from someone else.
I really appreciate your response but I am happy to announce that after
repeated trys of doing what Symantec said and some other fooling around, for
whatever reason, I got my original homepage back! I have no idea what did it
but I am pleased because I was getting used to the idea that I would have to
reformat and you know what a pain that is. Thank you again for your offer to
help.

That's great, Stan, I'm glad you've got it all sorted out. If you have
any other problems in future, please don't be put off from posting by
the likes of Uncle Grumpy; there are plenty of people here who would be
happy to help you. All the best!
