Highlight and delete

In all other word-processing programs I've used, it was easy to highlight a
word, phrase, sentence, or paragraph and then either delete, copy, or cut it.
I cannot do this with Word. Is there some "option" that I don't know about?
Have I chosen something I didn't mean to choose? This is sooo frustrating and
I feel so foolish because I can't figure out how this simple, universal
editing choice is not available in Word.

I have MS Office 2003 with Word that came with Microsoft XP Home Edition in
late 2004.

Ensure that you have the two Word Perfect entries in tools > options >
general unchecked and tools > options > edit > typing replaces selection
checked.
