high computer usage for internet explorer

My internet explorer is going very slow. I cleaned out all of the temp files,
including offline content. If I check the task manager it says I am using up
to 80% of my cpu on Internet explorer. I tried updating to i.e. 7.

What is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

It's not a good idea to update when a program is having problems. Fix the
underlying problems first. Start with a malware check as Malke indicated.
