Hiding file shares

How do you hide file shares from users without using the
$ on the share name. I have a file server named files
and everyone has their own share folder on it. Some
groups have folders too. We want users to be able to
open \\files and only see the shares that they have
permissions for. I have seen this on an old NT 4.0
network a long time ago, but can't seem to replicate it.

This is not possible in Windows. Even if the user does not have permission
to the share\folder they will still be able to see it.
