hid service fails

Bernhard Schuler

hi NG!

The scanner-button event doesn't run the associated progs anymore since
SP2. I found the following reason:
The service "human device interface access" fails to run with error 2
"the specified file could not be found" (translation from german). I
reinstalled SP2 with no effect. Can anybody help?

thanks: Bernhard

Hi Bernhard,

Check with the manufacturer of the scanner for an updated driver and tools
set. It sounds like the ones currently in use are not compliant with SP2.
This needs to be resolved by the manufacturer, but don't be surprised if
they tell you to uninstall SP2.

Hi Rick

Thanks for this input. Sounds as if HID service was installed or
modified by the scanner software. I was convinced it to be a native MS
Windows service. Btw: I checked out Epson for new drivers. Negative.

Hi Bernhard,

Yes, it probably was and the problem now may be a conflict between the WIA
feature of WinXP and the scanning software. You may want to disable the WIA
service and see if that help (start/run msconfig and check the services
tab).

Hi Rick

Thanks for this idea. I checked this out. No change if WIA is running or
not. btw: Do you know how to reinstall a single service especially the
HID-service? Can't find anything about that in MS kb.

Hi,

Don't know of any way to reinstall individual services. Does the event log
tell you what file the HID service was having trouble locating?

Hi Bernhard,

The following error will occur if any of the three files (hidserv.dll,
mouhid.sys and mouclass.sys) are missing.

Could not start the Human Interface Device Access service on Local
Computer. Error 126: the specified module could not be found

Extract hidserv.dll, mouhid.sys and mouclass.sys from drivers.cab in the
Windows XP CD to "<Systemroot>\Windows\System32\" to fix the issue.

1.Insert Windows XP Setup CD.
2.Browse to <CD-ROM>:\i386\drivers.cab
3.Double click the drivers.cab file. The compressed files in the Cab file
will be listed.
4.Copy the three files to <SystemRoot>\windows\system32\. Reboot the
computer.

The Human Interface Device Access service will then be started.
