Hibernation takes more time in my Windows-XP Professional Workstation

V

Hi

Very often I Hibernate my workstation , instead of shutting-down.
Usually my PC will hibernate within 1 minute ( or maximum of 80
seconds ) and go to power-off state ( even if 15 IE Windows are open
, some downloads are in progress, Antivirus scan is in progress )

But for the last two days , the hibernation takes almost 7 to 8
minutes.
No major applications installed or hardware changes done.
I close all applications and even stopped unnecessary Services - but
still it takes 8 minutes to complete hibernate.

There was enough free disk space in C Drive ( 2 GB free ); it requires
1 GB for the hiberfil.sys file.
Whereas , starting the PC ( from hibernate-state) , takes normal time
,...less than a minute.

Any clues , suggestions , solutions , recommendations will be highly
appreciated.

thanks in advance!

Turn off hibernation. Make sure the hiberfil.sys file is deleted. Run a
defrag for good measure, then turn on hibernation again. See if that helps.

Not added memory, have you?

The time taken and size of hiberfil.sys depend on the computer's RAM. Thus
there is one case in which adding memory slows the computer, and this is it.

Hi Rock

Yes I had turned-off Hibernation.
Then the 1 GB file ( hidden file ) hiberfil.sys disappeared from C
Drive. And the free space on C drive increased by 1 GB.

Now I had run Defragmentation Analysis ; the following Google file is
of size 960 MB and has 260 segments.

\Documents and Settings\sunrise\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Google Desktop Search\rpm.cf1

Then run " Defragment" ; it rearranged the files ( as shown in the
bar ).

Then restarted the PC. Then enabled hibernation; as soon as Hibernation
is enabled the file hiberfil.sys appeared on C drive ( as a hidden
file).

BUT , ....still the Hibernation takes 12 minutes ( in my first post I
had specified that it takes 8 minutes ; actually it takes 12 minutes ).

I had upgraded RAM from 512 MB to 1 GB ; but it was 2 months ago; ( and
hibernation usually will take 30 to 40 seconds ; some times a maximum
of 1 minute).

Only for the last 4 days hibernation takes 12 minutes.

No clues!

I had upgraded RAM from 512 MB to 1 GB ; but it was 2 months ago; ( and

of 1 minute).

Yes I had read in some ( Microsoft site ) about 1 GB RAM will affect (
slow down) hibernation i.e will increase the time taken to hibernate.

Four days before , I had connected an external HardDisk ( SATA)
through USB;
there was some problem in the external HDD ( the indicator light become
red even though I didn't access any files from the external-HDD). ; I
was able to see the additional Drive letter (for the external HDD) but
no files listed under this Drive.

Seems I had accidentally stopped the Windows Services "Logical Disk
Manager" and "Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service".

Then without starting those two above mentioned services and without
disconnecting the external HDD I had rebooted my workstation.

Now it prompted "there is some significant hardware change ; Activate
the Windows".

[ And I am NOT sure when I had started those two services : "Logical
Disk Manager" and "Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service". ]

So I had online activated Windows ( as specivied in a Windows Support
site) from command line , running the command : oobe/ msoobe /a
{ oobe -> Out Of the Box Enable }

So after this re-activation of Windows , hibernation takes 12 minutes ;
resuming from hibernation state just less than 1 minute as usal ;
shutdown ( turn-off) takes as usual 1 minute ; PC in on state -> then
"restart" also takes around 1.5 minute.

After the memory is increased from 512 MB to 1 GB , I had restarted ,
hibernated , turn-off ... many times; Hibernation usually will take 30
seconds to less than a minute ( depending upon number of processes
running ,etc). But only for the last 4 days it takes 12 minutes.

Hi Rock,
You had specified to delete "hiberfil.sys" file. But I can't see that
file once I disable "hibernation" from Control panel -> Power options
-> "Hibernation Tab-> check box"

After disabling hibernation , I searched for the file "hiberfil.sys" ;
but its NOT found even if I run in command line dir /a hiberfil.sys
from C:\ directory.
So how to delete this file "hiberfil.sys"?

Control panel -> Power options -> "Hibernation Tab-> check box" -> here
its specified the file size for hiberfile.sys as 1023 MB = 1 GB.

Pagefile.sys occupies 786 MB.

Google Desktop is running and the following file occupies 900 MB:
\Documents and Settings\sunrise\Local Settings\Application
Data\Google\Google Desktop Search\rpm.cf1

Is there any unnecessary Windows Services stopped to reduce time taken
for hibernation?
I had checked all services in TaskManager and didn't find any
unnecessary services

Using AVG Antivirus Free version 7.5.
I had read in some forums that this year ( beginning of JAN-2007) , AVG
has released Free Version 7.5.

Earlier it was 7.1 ; but I am not sure I it got updated in my
Workstation from AVG 7.1 to 7.5 !!!

Even if I had shut-down all antivirus and anti-spyware applications ,
the Hibernation takes 12 minutes ( starting from the last 4 days )
.......

Recently I had installed "Windows Live DeskTop Search" -> is it a cause
for this issue?
"GOOGLE DeskTop Search" is also running.

Having both "GOOGLE DeskTop Search" & "Windows Live DeskTop Search"
...slow down the PC and/or affect Hibernation speed?

Can I roll back to earlier restore point using "System Restore"?
In case of roll-back to previous state using "System Restore" , will
"applications installed and files downloaded from internet " will be
lost ?

Your suggestion / recommendation / solution will be highly appreciated.

thanks in advance!

Ok, sorry that didn't help. Sometimes the hiberfil.sys fil get's corrupted
and recreating it helps. Unfortunately not in your case. Sorry I don't
have any other suggestions.

You might check if the harddrive is running in PIO mode instead of DMA
due to erroring out. If you look in Device Manager for the primary IDE
channel, properties, advanced settings and see if the drive is actually
running DMA. If it reverted to PIO you can remove and reinstall the
channel to get it back to DMA.

Hi Bob

thanks for your reply.

Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers ->
Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24DB
Primary IDE channel
Secondary IDE channel

Right click on "Primary IDE channel" -> Properties -> Advanced Settings
->

Device 0
Device Type : Auto Detection
Transfer Mode : DMA if Available
Current Transfer mode : Not applicable

Device 1
Dedvice Type : Auto Detection ( grayed out )
Transfer Mode : DMA if Available
Current Transfer mode : Ultra DMA Mode 5

Earlier I had two HDDs ; now only one HDD.

thanks in advance!

I'd say check the data cable, does the drive show up in the BIOS info
when the system boots? Something isn't working right.
