Hibernation problems

-- Dell inspiron 5100 won't go into hibernation; instead it goes into
non-Windows state- machine is still on with blank grey screen and DOS cursor
blinking upper left. I must manually power off. This happened before and was
told mcafee program was problem-but I now use Windows defender.

You might try Microsoft's UPHCleaner.exe (User Hive Profile Cleanup).
Sometimes shut down can get "stuck" because a part of an account won't close
out.
You can Google for it; it's mirrored all over the place plust located at
MS's site.
