Hibernation in XP Pro

C

Colin

I recently installed Windows XP Professional, and ever
since, every once in a while, my computer just shuts off
like there is a power failure. However, the light is
still on like it is in Hibernation of something! There is
no warning at all, and then I have to hold the power
button in until the light goes out, reboot, and wait
while it runs disk check. It is very annoying...can
anyone help? PLEASE? Thank you. I am computerally
challenged and don't even use Hibernation!

Go into Power Options and make sure you have "Standby" or "Suspend"
turned off or set to NEVER.

Control Panel -> Power Options

You can also control Hibernation from the same dialog. Just click on
the Hibernation tab and turn it off if it's on.

Everything has been set to never...Sorry, I should have
told you that in the last one. I don't know what else to
do!

See below.......
told you that in the last one. I don't know what else to
do!

Consult your computer manual and see if you can find out how to enter
the BIOS setup program. Usually, this can be accomplished by pressing
a certain key or sequence of keys during the boot up process, called
POST. (Power On Self Test)

There are power options in the BIOS setup program that may override
the ones specified in Windows. If the BIOS power options are set to
"Suspend" or "Standby" after a certain time, that will cause the
symptoms you describe. Not for certain that's the cause, but it's
worth looking into. Good luck.
