Hi all.
I've just got my new vista desktop.
All shiny and new. On my old XP desktop I used to use hibernate
all the time which was great. I see in Vista they've merged
all this into some Sleep. For my purposes however sleep isn't
really what I want. If I pull the power cable out the back of the
machine
or the power goes (Which happens alot in our house, due to dodgy
electrics)
the machine will not restart again.

How can I get proper hibernation back? Something I read makes me
believe
laptops get this as standard, I'd like it on my desktop =)

Cheers
Chris.

You can change one of the power buttons in Control Panel - Power Options.
And you can change what the sleep button does as well. But all options are
on the popup menu next to the power buttons.

Cheers, I think this was the problem. I used PowerCfg /hibernate on
and now I have hibernate available....
I'm still not 100% certain whether hibernate and hybrid sleep are the
same thing, lots of
conflicting information around

hybrid sleep is sleep and hibernate at the same time. Sleep is used to wake
if still available (ie the power stayed on) else the hibernation file..

After hibernation check your internet connection. Ever since the beta of
Vista every single time i've used hibernate or sleep or hybrid sleep i have
been unable to get an internet connection. The only option is to restart the
machine. It may not happen to you, but i know quite a few people who have
had the same experience.

Am I correct in believing that "hybrid sleep" requires the hyberfil.sys
file, but ordinary "sleep" does not?

Computer does the work to hibernate but instead of turning off when finished
it goes to sleep. So if memory is wiped by loss of power then it can resume
from the the identical hibernation (which is a copy of memory).
