I have Windows XP with SP2.
I plug in a USB flash drive, and the computer says it is running USB 1.1 and
I need a hi-speed USB 2 host controller.
Is this hardware I buy?
Or a software download?
How do I obtain it?

Before you spend any money, try all the USB ports on your PC, front
and back to see if it still gives you that error. If it does, that means
your systems controller is 1.1. There is no software to download, for
you'll need to purchase a new USB 2.0 PCI card which plugs into your
MoBo (Motherboard), to connect any 2.0 USB peripherals. A USB PCI
controller card runs from $10 to $90 depending on your pocketbook and
how many USB ports you want. Check at Circuit City or Best Buy. There
are hundreds on eBay, but Caveat Emptor.
P.S. You could check your PC under Control Panel>System>Device Manager>
USB Host Controller to see if any of your USB ports are identified as
Enhanced, which means they are 2.0, but I doubt it.
