So I got my old hard drive, it had windows xp running on it just fine. I
built a totally new computer with the old hard drive as the only thing i
saved. Now I just bought a brand new upgrade disk from MS for 100$ so i
could put it on my new computer. So it loads up just fine the old drive got
me past the check for an older version. I then Format the old drive so I
can use it for a clean System only drive. Well low and behold the computer
randomly just reboots after the format. So I start again.. Now Its asking
again for the preexisting version of windows.. MY old disk was an upgrade
from my computer from before. Ive got like 6 microsoft disks but all are
upgrades or Student versions. What on earth do I do now to get it past the
search for preexisting versions? Can i make a boot disk from another
computer i got running xp? Any help would be appreciated this is really
irritating because i got a brand spanking new disk and old version is now
deleted.

As long as one of the older Upgrade CDs are for a qualifying OS, you
can use them to verify your entitlement to use the Upgrade. (Academic
licenses don't qualify for upgrading, though.)
