i posted on here yesterday about a problem i am having -
when i get to the welcome screeen and i click on my name
it takes me to my desktop picture and then brings me back
to the welcome screen and logs me off. i have tried
running it in safe mode but the same thing happens. i
also tried repairing my xp but it got halfway through the
installation and i got a warning. now it says one of the
system32 files is missing on start up.

the only two options i have are to totally wipe out my
computer (but i have exams coming up and there is soooo
much stuff i need on my computer) or if there is a way, i
need to transfer my files to another computer or cd or
something using ms DOS. is there a way to do this? i
currently have my dad's laptop connected to my computer
and i was wondering if there is away to transfer the
files using ms dos. YOU'RE HELP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE WOULD
BE APPRECIATED.

Go into console mode, user pswd of administrator (if there is one), use DOS.
NTFS converter may be necessary.

ummmm wow. i have no clue what any of that means.

Hayley,

No guarantees, but look at http://newdos.yginfo.net/msdos71/index.htm.
There's a link to download a version of MS-DOS which will allow you to read
(and copy) the files you need from your hard drive.

You will need access to another computer, of course, to download the file,
but since you are posting to this newsgroup you have that. Perhaps a
tech-savvy friend can help you if you are nervous about the following. You
need to download the file and create a "boot floppy," which is a floppy disk
you can use in your ailing machine. You may need to set the BIOS on the
ailing machine to boot first from the floppy disk, not from the hard drive.
(If you don't know what that involves, again get help from a more PC-savvy
buddy.)

When you boot from the new floppy disk you will be able to access the hard
drive, which uses a file format called NTFS. Unfortunately, older versions
of MS-DOS can't "see" files on NTFS drives, which is why you need to
download and use the version in the link above.

This is by no means your only option. You may be able to do a repair of
Windows from your XP CD, but here you must be careful not to simply
re-install XP; doing so will wipe out all your data. A successful repair
will allow you to boot to Windows XP without destroying your data.
Information about repair installs can befound at
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm.

Good luck!

Alex

There is one other way to recover your files without wiping your hard drive
and that is to do a side by side install of Windows. Do this by installing
Windows alongside the installation you now have. Don't do a repair install.
Installing side by side will allow you to recover all your files and then
you can reformat. I think the dos programs that allow you to recover files
have to be paid for although I'm nopt entirely sure.

Well after your second post it is quite obvious what you need to do - find a
reputable tech person and ask them to fix it!
There is no use telling you how to do or what programs you need to use
because you will likely blow away all your data. Seek professional help.

There is a version of linux that boots and runs from a CD, everything is
autoconfigured and you will be able to see your
XP data and save your information on floppy disks or the internet.
www.knoppix.com you must download the knoppix 3.4 ISO and burn it on a cdrom
with a program like NERO
then set your computer to boot from the cd rom (from the bios) and insert
the knoppix cd in.

Linux will start and you will see on your desktop icons for eatch hard drive
and partition you have on your pc.

then you can transfer the data to floppies or (mor advanced) to a cd.

This version of linux is often called a RESCUE disk because it enables you
to rescue your data.
Knoppix is really easy to use... perhaps if you have some trouble you can
ask a friend who knows something about linux to help you, or post here
again.
