HELP!!

Sherry

I think my friend's computer may have a virus/worm. We
have been trying to run an online virus scan from the
Symantec website. However, once the virus definitions are
about to download, a window pops up to say the computer is
not running a late enough version of Internet Exployer to
complete the download and run a scan. Yet, when we check
the IE version from the "Help" file, under "About Internet
Exployer" it says the computer is indeed running IE 6.0.
How can we remedy this? I mean, he has had IE 6.0 for
months now, why is the Symantec not able to read that on
his computer, and what can we do to enable Symantec to
download its virus definitions to scan and clean his
computer? Thanks for your help!

Hi Sherry :)

It may be that the virus is preventing you from downloading the removal
tools. You might try doing a maunal install of the definitions, or get the
free version of the following AV's:

F-Prot - which will run from DOS.
Home Use - Free
http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/win/
or
AVG6 Free: (you can do a manual update for current definitions)
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

However, if you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your
PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again from Safe Mode to
be sure there are no lingering items on the system.)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
