I have my nephews machine with an original xp home CD and
the sticker that was applied to the machine when purchased.

It has crashed(the MB is dead) and i have built a new
system, BUT the number on the machine is not the proper
code,

HOW does one get the proper xp number to reinstall, it
seems he was never given his booklet when he bought his
IBM system

If the XP OS came with the machine it would be an OEM version. Or did he
purchase a retail version of XP and install it himself?
If its an OEM version its tied to the original machine and its original
parts. I would guess that you cannot activate it. When the MB died your XP
died with it. If this is the case you have no choice but to but a new XP.

The product key sticker on the machine is probably for an IBM OEM copy
that was pre-installed on your nephew's machine. If the original XP
Home CD you're referring to is a retail copy, then it will have a
different product key which you will need in order to install it.

If the original XP Home CD is a restore CD or an IBM OEM copy, when
you changed out the motherboard, you no longer have an IBM BIOS to
match the product key to. If that's true, you're probably going to
have to purchase a retail copy of XP Home to install on that machine.

However, you might want to do a Google search to gather information on
how to make changes to the installation copy so it will match up with
the product key type. The MS apologists will scream it's illegal,
and so forth, but it's your decision. Go here for guidance on what
