Windows XP Home refused to boot. It would go so far and then restart. This
also happened to safe mode.

I then tried to do a recovery installation from my CD. This appeared to work
but failed at the end due to an internal exception error.

I have been able to install another copy of windows beside the existing one
which works finw. However I do not have access to my documents in the
original installation as access is denied. Can I get past this?

Yes. Look up "taking ownership of a file or folder" in XP Help and Support.

And a tip - PLEASE to not post a request for assistance here with a subject
like "Help". Many people will just not read a post with such a "generic"
subject. Try to put a succinct précis of your problem in the subject line.

When you use F8 to get the boot menu, rather than safe mode, select the
disable automatic restart option and see if you get a BSOD error message.

You simply need to take ownership of those folders and files from the original installation.
You can also copy all of the previous users programs and settings to the new user profile.
The following articles will guide you.

With XP Home, you will need to perform the taking ownership work in Safe Mode.

MVP Rick Rogers has a good explanation of the step by step process.
