Does any one know how I can bypass and then delete the Windows XP
Professional Windows logon Password security check? I forgot my password on
the downstairs PC because I haven't used it in awhile and it has expired. I
can not log on to Windows and need to get into it to get some information
from that PC. I can not even get into it fqr enoough to use the Forgotten
Password Wizard unless you know a way to get to it that i don't.

Hello,

Do you remember if this Windows has more than 1 administrator account? If so, login with the other account.

At login screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL keys twice. Then type in "administrator" as username. Skip password. Press Enter.

To lookup passwords for all user accounts, Start / Run / type following
CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 <ENTER>

I've typed it all caps only for reading ease. When it comes up, look at every account and update as you want.
May I add -- write it on a 3 x 5 card, and keep safe.
The administrator password is a necessity if you ever need the Recovery Console.

If unable to get logged in to normal mode, try Safe Mode.
When this pc is booting up , (well before Windows even begins to load) tap & repeat tapping the F8 Function Key so you can select SAFE Mode.

Best to you.

That is a dificult one........ but the fact you have another PC makes it
easier!
The quickest way to access the hard drive is to remove the disk from your
downstairs Pc and attatch it as a slave to your other PC.
You will then be able to access all the data on that drive without needing
to have a password. The other pc should be running Xp though so that it can
read the file system on the slave disk

If the suggestions that Maurice gave you don't work, use NTpasswd to
change the built-in Administrator password to a blank. Then log into
that account, go to the User Accounts applet, and make your changes.

Thank you for pointing out that reference, Malke. ;-)

For Sarge's benefit, I want to add this (once he manages to get into XP).
In XP's Help and Support, look up (using search box) "Create a password reset disk", and "Protecting your passwords".

Set the administrator account password to never expire.
To prevent the password from expiring, follow these steps:

1.. On the desktop, right-click My Computer , and then click Manage on the
shortcut menu.

2.. Double-click Local Users and Groups , and then click Users .

3.. Double-click the account that you want to modify, and then click to
select Password never expires .

4.. Click OK , and then close the Computer Management dialog box.

Something in here should help. http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/lostpass.htm

Hi,

If the admin pass is lost or forgotten it is possible to reset it using
Active@ Password Changer utility. The tool is really powerful, it never
failed me before and worked simply great. It is small yet easy to use
and can quickly perform the operation.
