Okay, here's my system specs. I have an A7N8X-E Deluxe Mobo, AMD Athlon XP
3000+, 1GB DDR 400 Corsair XMS Ram, ATI Radeon 9700 AIW Vid Card, and blah
blah blah. Anyways, I have Windows XP and have noticed that whenever I
install it, it automatically installs Service Pack 1, which is cool, and
irrelevant I think, but anyways. I am upgrading my system, I'm gettin an
Asus A8N-SLI Mobo, AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, and an eVGAe-GeForce 6800 GS PCI
Express Vid card. My question is, well, actually I have a couple. But,
number one, do I have to go and spend another 130 bucks to get another
license of XP Pro because I am changing mobo and processor? What is
Microsofts policy on how much you can change in your computer before having
to buy another copy of it? I ordered a copy of XP Home with these components
from zipzoomfly.com, if I install that when I put my system together, and
later upgrade my Hard Drive, am I going to have to buy another version of
XP....and I'm not up to date on how the 64bit architecture works, do I NEED
to run a 64 bit version of windows if I have an Athlon 64 X2? Any help you
guys can give me would be most appreciated, thank you for taking the time to
read this noob post.

You can run the XP in either 32 or 64 bit but, there are few
applications currently for the 64 bit OS. I run XP on a 64 bit
processor and have not had any problems.

If your original copy of Windows is a retail copy (not an OEM version), the
EULA allows you to move the installation to the new system. Uninstall it
from the old system and there's no extra Windows purchase necessary. You
will have to re-activate again but that's not a problem since the move is
"allowed" by the EULA terms for a retail copy of XP.

Under the scenario you're describing, you would not have to buy a new copy
of Windows when you replace a hard drive.

You can run 32- or 64-bit Windows on your new system.
