help with vista freeze

I posted on here a while back about vista freezing and I thought it might be
the video driver. I since have downloaded the latest driver and it still
freezes. I then tried to uninstall all drivers, reverting back to the
original MS driver. I thought all was fine, but came in this morning and
sure enough, vista was locked up again. Sometimes, it will freeze at the
login prompt, or while the desktop is first loading. Other times, it could
be after 3 hours with no activity from myself. I've looked at the event log
and nothing shows up as any problem aside from an "unexpected system
shutdown" that I have to do to reboot. Can anyone think of anything else I
can try? I don't know if reinstalling would fix it, but I'm tempted to try.

AMD 64 3000+
Chaintech SK8T800
2 Gb Kingston Ram
NVidia GeForce 7600 GT

Faulty ram. Run the diagnostic (just type 'memory' into the search box for
the diagnostic tool)

I already ran the test and it came back error free. Sorry I didn't mention
that in my first post. Is there a chance the test isn't accurate and there
is in fact a bad memory stick? Thanks.

One more thing. I have XP on another partition and I have not had one
freeze when running XP. That makes me think it's not the memory. I just
reran the test and again it came back with no errors. Any other ideas?

Hi,

It's fairly accurate (tried it on known bad sticks), but there's always a
chance that it's wrong. You could try a third party product as well.

Frankly, if it's passed the memory diagnostic, then I would suspect the
problem lies elsewhere. Quite possibly the Nvidia drivers.

Thanks, but it does it without the nvidia drivers too when it's using the
default vista drivers. I guess I'll have to go back to my old video card and
see if it still does it.

I've swapped out the memory for other memory that I know is good. I also
tried a different video card, but neither change made a difference. Vista
froze each time. I'm not too familiar with IRQs and how they work... would a
conflict there cause this problem and how could I troubleshoot that? Thanks.

have you tried leaving it for a while, mine is doing the same, i have changed
all hardware and drivers to no avail. However it always starts working again
in less than 6 mins if you leave it. Usually within 3 mins

Yes, I've left it for hours and nothing changes. I've resorted to trying to
reinstall in the hopes that something during the original installation got
hosed, but now it freezes part way through the install and I've tried that 4
times now. I guess Vista is a dud for me. Anyone know if I can unregister
my serial# and sell it? I'm assuming not, but in a case like this where it
just won't work, it certainly makes me feel like I got ripped off.

I realize your post is fairly old, but you might look at this forum for some
more ideas.

There is nothing here that points to AMD, but most of the solutions dealt
with iaStor errors, which you might see in the System Windows log in Event
viewer. I fixed my Dell machine running Home Premium temporarily by switching
cables on the DVD/CD drives and then permanently fixed it with BIOS and
firmware update on the Phillips DVDROM drive.
