Help with new A7N8X DX

I got a new computer and everything was working great. I installed some
games, PowerDVD software, and Norton Antivirus. I also updated Windows
using Windows Update (it installed various security patches plus DirectX
9.0b). During the process of all this, the computer restarted when needed
and everything was fine. After that, I connected to the internet, used
Outlook Express, etc, played some of my games, etc.

HOWEVER, in the morning when I turned the computer on, it would get through
the windows startup screen (the black one with the horizontal bar that moves
back and forth), but then I would get the following error:
Services.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (oxc000006). Click ok to
terminate.
Upon clicking ok, the system would hang on a black screen.

After restarting the computer, I tried all the options... safe mode/safe
mode with networking/previous configuration. Nothing worked... I would
still get the same error at the same place.

I then tried to use the Windows XP disc to access the recovery console
(thinking maybe NAV corrupted something). However, EACH TIME upon trying
to boot from the CD-Rom (about 4 tries), usually when it was trying to load
'ACPI Embedded Controller Driver', I would get errors. It would restart
after pressing 'any key'. Examples:
- File acpiec.sys caused unexpected error (32768) at line 5897 in
d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup)...
- pcmcia.sys is corrupted
- File ohcil3p4.sys is corrupted
So, I can't even boot from the CDRom to reinstall Windows.

As a last ditch effort (and knowing from past experience that memory
problems can cause very weird errors), I tried booting the computer two more
times, each time only using one memory stick. However, I'd still get the
Services.exe - Application error. I also tried each stick with the boot
CD... no joy.

Any ideas? the cpu does not appear to be overheating. I'm running the cpu
fan at full-tilt and have 4 other case fans. I'm working with the reseller
that sold me the system, but I'm not having much luck there and wanted to
try something else before I sent the system back to him.

here's the config:

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MOBO
AMD Athlon 2800+ Barton Core /w Thermaltake Volcano fan
1 GB Corsair Value Select PC3200 memory
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Video Card
LiteOn CDRW
LiteOn DVD
WD HDD
Antec 430Watt Powersupply
Win XP Home

The first thing you do BEFORE installing an OS, is download a copy of
memtest86 from www.memtest86.com . This program will make a standalone
boot floppy for you. When it boots, it runs the screen at 640x480 and
tests all of the memory, by "lifting" the program out of the way.

On the A7N8X, make sure the memory and processor run at the same
frequency, by using a setting of "100%" or "sync" or whatever it is
called this week (maybe "Auto" ?) in the BIOS.

If your memory is bad, perhaps the files installed have been corrupted.
It could also be a bad disk drive or bad cable.

But at least start with verifying that the memory is error free, because
without an error free memory, anything can happen.
