XP may only be activated on *one* machine.

If it's just for the kids to play games on...
why not just load Windows2000 onto it!

If I understand correctly what you are asking, you have a single copy of
Windows XP which you have installed on two computers and are asking how to
get around the activation requirement on the second.

Coming to a Microsoft newsgroup to ask for help on how to pirate Microsoft
software isn't the smartest thing in the world to do.

Hi Mandyboo

I do the same thing on my kids computer as it is not on the internet as
well. Unfortunately every 30 days I have to reinstall the windows xp as it
expired. That's how I do it, and I know it is a pain.

I doubt my kids computer can be hooked to the internet, I just have it for
them to download their games in it. Also I do not have a copy of windows
2000. I do however have a copy of 98, but their machine does not work right
with 98 on it at all. It use to have 2000 on it when it was bought, 2nd
hand. But also a very little hard drive, and needed to make room for their
games!!

So, my advice is format it and reinstall xp and everything else back on it
again!

Hope that helps!

As I already suggested...use your *legal* copy of win2k.
you won't have any problems...
since it won't be on the internet...you can skip the updates etc .
a fresh install of win2k will certainly take a lot less room than XP
anyway!!!!

You need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer on
which you install it. (As long as you have multiple identical licenses,
it doesn't matter if you use the same CD for the installations, as long
as you use a different license each time.)

Just as it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating
systems, it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which it
is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to determine
final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism,
Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more difficult)
multiple installations using a single license.

One can buy additional licenses, assuming one already has a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would if
you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

I am using the tryout feature for now as the darn computer is not connected
to the internet. When the day comes don't you worry, there will be a legal
copy of windows on their system.

There is no such thing as a "try out feature." There used to be
time-bombed evaluation licenses, but those went out of legitimate public
circulation years ago.

It's possible to get a legal copy (with license)
on ebay for a low price.

You will never have to worry about the "time" running out...
and the machine will run faster with win2k than it does with XP...
and win2k takes up less room on the harddrive.

I'd seriously consider it

It doesn't matter whose computer it is. If you put a single copy of Windows
on more than one computer, that *is* piracy.

You may not like those rules (I'm not crazy about them either, and wish that
families could use a single license on more than one family computer), but
that's not the way it is. If you violate those rules, that *is* software
piracy, by definition.

I'm just not activating it, so you have 30 days before this expires!!! When
it comes to the day it needs to be activated and the computer is on the net,
it will have a fresh new copy of windows, and not windows 2k like Philo wants
me to try and buy on ebay!! (forget that)!!

I should say a fresh new copy of windows perhaps Vista with a legal license
and all. So for now it's just activated on my own computer which is on the
net and I know the license is tied to this computer.

Please let quit this bickering and help someone else with their computer
woes than go on & on.

Don't worry, for your sake I removed my windows from my kids and replaced it
with boring windows 98 SE which I have a legal license for!! Boring!!!
Still I'm not activating it, because there is no way I can, it's not on the
internet!

What's life like in the state of denial?

Its for my kids computar not someone elses, get a
grip!

Irrelevant. And a fine example you're setting.

I agree! That's the reason that licensed users all have to deal with the
'pain-in-the-___' WPA everytime you add or change any hardware!
