Help with IE 6 on Windows XP w/ SP2

Hello:

I'm having a serious problem with Internet Explorer and I need to fix
it ASAP. I use Internet Explorer 6 (v.
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519) on a machine running Windows XP
with SP2I use Internet Explorer . On some pages, when I try to
download a file or click on a link that is supposed to cause a
Javascript pop-up box to open, the browser hangs: the cursor remains a
hand and I can move it around the screen, but none of the links work
and Ihave no menu or toolbar functionality. When I ALT-TAB to a
different window and try to return to it, nothing happens. According
to the Windows Task Manager, everything is fine and it lists that
window as "Running." There is no unusual allocation of memory that is
slowing down performance and I don't see any foreign processes. I've
run Symantec Antivirus and Spybot S+D, but the computer registers no
virus or spyware. I have Hi-Jack This v. 1.99, but I'll be honest and
I have no idea what all of the applications are.

I downloaded ie6setup.exe from the Microsoft website using Firefox
(whenever I tried to do it through Internet Explorer the browser froze)
and tried reinstalling it, but I keep getting the "Setup has detected a
newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on the system"
error message, even after resetting the IsInstalled data item value
from "1" to "0." I don't have Windows XP on CD as it came pre-loaded
on my machine. I would be content to just use Firefox, but a number of
applications I use require Internet Explorer.

Is there anyone who might be willing to try and help me fix the
problem? Does it sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks.

Look at your settings in the Symantec product and also in Spybot (under
"Immunization") to see if either program is set to refuse Java or any
scripts. Also, if you don't have the most recent version of Java
uninstall it and get the latest from:
