Windows Media Player 7 will also play the newer files.
Beyond upgrading the player, you could:
- use a custom profile that uses the version 8 or 7 codecs instead of
version 9 (see the Saving Movies > Custom WMV Profiles page of my website)
- convert the saved movie into another format that will play on them - you
would need to know what works and then use other software to do the
conversion.

You can create a new profile with the Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft
and create a profile that uses the WMV version 8 codec. If you need more
