Help with Default Users after joining a domain

When the machine is in a workgroup, I am able to follow Microsoft's instructions and successfully customize and set the Default User by copying the user profile. All local users I create/login with at that point get all the customizations just fine. I then join the machine to a WinNT domain, which in and of itself does not cause any problems. All existing and new user accounts (all local machine accounts) continue to work fine and have all of the customizations I originally made. But as soon as I login to the machine with a domain account, all profiles, including previously customized local accounts, get trashed. Any ideas on how to prevent this?

Well we seem to 'the few'. Although I haven't fully tested this whole
concept on more than a couple PCs I have not seen anything that bad. My
issues have been with Desktop shortcuts and My Documents (simple stuff) but
never anything that could be considered 'trashed'. So my first thought is -
What policies are coming down off of your domain and/or is the profile used
coming from the domain instead of locally?

No domain policies are in play here, and I should temper my comment about things being "trashed". They are far from trashed, but significant enough to be a real pain when doing many machines. The Desktop is missing many icons and the entire Start...Programs menu is gone. Most other settings are also gone, like Connection specific settings.

My minor issue was with the All Users desktop & Desktop Clean Up Wizard
running by default due to sysprep. So I whacked it out of that profile I
copied.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\CleanupWiz
Value Name: NoRun
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: (0 = enabled, 1= disable wizard)

Some of the stuff still vanished, like desktop shortcuts, so I called
something somewhere in default user RUN or RunOnce to reconstruct the
desktop. I also placed as little as possible in Default User and placed the
majority of everything in All Users. Change of pace from NT4.

Oh and forgot about this one, this article was previously published under
Q307543 which might be closer to your issue now that I've reread it.
