I have recently purchased a DVD RW Drive, but when I
installed it Windows XP detected 2 drives a DVD RW and a
DVD Drive. The DVD RW works fine but the DVD Drive just
sits there taking up a drive letter doing nothing ?

I also have a CD RW on this system but that is working
fine !

I have tried un-installing both drives and rebooting but
the same thing happens again ?

Any ideas ?

Some software programs will create a "virtual drive". What software do you
use for burning?

I am using Nero for burning !

It's possible that XP is recognizing a miscommunication through your motherboard that needs updated drivers.

The motherboard may be telling XP there are 2 drives because either the MB doesn't support the technology or doesn't have the drivers to understand the technology.

I'd check your motherboard manufacturer website for IDE drivers updates.

Hello,

In the past there have been problems with a DVD being
hooked up to the same IDE cables as a HDD. The reason
for this was that DVDs tend to be PIO mode 4 devices,
while hard disk drives use the advanced 133/100 modes
of data transfer.

Make sure your two DVDs are set up on the same cable.

Make sure your HDD is on a separate cable.

Let us know if that works for you.

right click on the drive icon in My Computer window and see if it has
options that say "Mount" and "Unmount". If so you've set up a virtual drive.
Nero has a tool called Nero ImageDrive that you may have set up. You can
disable it through Start->Programs->Nero folder
