HELP!!! Windows XP continuously boots after installing SP1

C. J. Johnson

My mother-in-law has a Gateway computer and recently
reinstalled all her programs. Once she did this, she was
unable to connect to the internet using dial-up. I
reinstalled SP1a but now the system continuously reboots.
I have tried creating a bootable floppy but the system
doesn't recognize the hard drive (NTFS). I need a way to
put the system back the way it was so that I can backup
some critical data and then I plan to reformat and reload
the system. I would appreciate any assistance that you
could provide. Time is of the essense.

Thanks

1. This is a very noted problem for users after installing SP1. This edit
corrects the behavior.

Dial-Up Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable (Line 87)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

2. Repair the Windows XP Installation - Note: You will forfeit all MS
Updates.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information
about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run
WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is
selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP. Follow
the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Kelly, thanks for your suggestion but I am unable to load XP....system continuously runs post, xp startup screen and then continuously repeats the process. I tried to make an xp boot disk but because sys uses NTFS, doesn't recognize c drive. Do you have any suggestions on how I can create a generic xp boot disk/cd so that I can retrieve some data that wasn't backed up. I will be waiting for your response...Thanks in advance.

Why don't you try reboot and pressing the F8 key right after the BIOS
protion of the boot procees - i.e. initail startup.
1.. Use the F8 key. On a computer that is configured to start to multiple
operating systems, you can press F8 when you see the Startup menu.
2.. Use the arrow keys to select a Safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
Hopefully, Safe Mode will let you into the GUI mode. When a Service Pack is
installed it creates a restore point. To get to the restore point you click
start and go to the Help and Support Center applet and choose: Undo changes
to your computer with System Restore. This will take you to another menu -
choose restore my computer to an earlier time. when you get the calender to
restore points choose the one prior to the SP installation.
