Help Wanted: iPod not recognized by XP Home Edition

Before my PC was upgraded to SP3, I was able to connect my 1st gen iPod
shuffle to all USB ports for charging and iTunes.

Since the upgrade, my iPod is not recognized by the system or iTunes. I'm
able to use the USB ports for items such as a mouse and keyboard.

I've searched the Web and iPod support, and found this question everywhere
without a proven answer. I checked the MS site and found a problem that was
generated by SP2. Just in case, I checked for the faulty registry entries,
but they weren't there. Probably removed in SP3.

This is really, really frustrating. I would be so appreciative of a solution.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

USB controllers have a limited amount of bandwidth. However it's the
Root Hub that has the real limitation, 500mA of maximum current draw.
I'm not sure if an iPod is a USB1(.1) or USB-2 device. That matters
because if it's USB 2.0 then it's likely your PC has only a single USB 2
Root Hub. This means all USB 2.0 devices are sharing that single hub.
As a test unplug all your other USB devices and then insert your iPod.
If it is correctly enumerated and working then your combination of USB
peripherals is overloaded with the iPod connected.
